**General Summary**:
The Veteran’s Affairs Assistant will provide administrative support to the Director of Veteran’s Affairs. The incumbent will serve as the first point of contact for the office and will interact with student veterans to explain the policies and procedures regarding the various benefit programs available to student veterans. S/he will also certify student enrollment through the secure Veteran Affairs system and will calculate and report cost of attendance to ensure that the student and university receives timely tuition and fee payments; compile statistical reports for proposals and auditing purposes, in accordance with Veterans Affairs and university protocol; and will serve as a liaison between the veteran and all state and federal agencies, as well as all campus offices to assist the veteran in their pursuit of their educational degree. The incumbent will also assist the Director in the coordination of work unit conferences, meetings and special events.

**Examples of Duties**:

- Interact with student veterans and explain the policies and procedures regarding the various benefit programs available to student veterans; assist Reserve and National Guard members with tuition assistance and National Guard Tuition Fee waiver submissions; assist students with stipend and payment inquiries; when appropriate, provide references to school or training programs.
- Prepare and answer correspondence accurately and in a timely manner to meet the needs of internal and external customers in accordance with university policies and procedures, to provide a high-level of customer service excellence and to maintain communication between the university and the work unit.
- Certify student enrollment through the secure Veterans Affairs system; calculate and report cost of attendance and cost changes to Veterans Affairs to ensure that the student and university receives timely tuition and fee payments, to ensure that the student receives their monthly stipend and to minimize overpayments.
- Maintain and archive both hard copy and electronic records, files and/or department/unit work materials in accordance with department/work unit, grant and university policies and procedures; gather, update and ensure accurate account of all student veterans, certification and changes to enrollment; enter information into respective departmental databases to retain current, accurate, organized and accessible records; retrieve information from files, when necessary.
- Assist the Director with the coordination of work unit conferences, meetings, interviews and appointments, special events or similar activities; order food, supplies and other necessary materials and equipment, as needed.
- Compile statistical reports for proposals and auditing, in accordance with Veterans Affairs and university protocol and request; gather and compile enrollment numbers, funds received and other required information and submit to the Director for review and approval.- Contact local veteran programs and state/federal agencies regarding educational benefits for disabled benefits.
- Acts as a liaison between the veteran and all state and federal agencies; represent the student in cases of payment or eligibility discrepancies; communicate with military Education Services Officers to ensure timely tuition assistance approvals for active duty and reservist students.
- Acts as a liaison between the veteran and all campus offices to assist the veteran in their pursuit of their degree; refer students to the various campus offices, including Student Veterans’ Center, Up, Academic Advising, Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions, based on their immediate need; assist student with petitioning the Registrar’s Office for military training credits, in-state residency appeals and/or for prior approval to take courses at other institutions;
- Communicate and coordinate efforts with students to exchange information, resolve problems and/or facilitate progress of activities; assist students in understanding the academic and attendance policies and procedures of the university.

**Qualifications**:

- The incumbent must have at least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in office management, office administration, business administration or business management is required. Knowledge of the educational benefits available to veterans is required. Experience working in a higher education system is preferred.
