**ABOUT RED HOOK INITIATIVE (RHI)**

Red Hook Farms, a project of Red Hook Initiative (RHI), is a youth-centered urban farming and food justice program in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We create opportunities for teens to expand their knowledge base, develop their leadership skills, and positively engage with each other, their community, and the environment. We operate two urban farm sites and our programs include a youth apprenticeship, weekly farm stands, a CSA farm share, a Garden Club for NYCHA residents, and farm visits for Red Hook schools. We strive to improve access to healthy, affordable produce for our community, on land that we steward with intention and care, while nurturing a new generation of green leaders.
RHI is a community-based nonprofit working to improve the lives of the more than 6,500 residents of Red Hook Houses, Brooklyn's largest public housing complex. RHI believes that the social change to overcome systemic inequities begins with empowered youth, and that change in communities should come from within. In partnership with community adults, we nurture young people in Red Hook to be inspired, resilient, and healthy, and to envision themselves as co-creators of their lives, community, and society.

**JOB SUMMARY**

The Chef Educator will be responsible for leading public cooking demonstration programming on Friday mornings, using recipes and curriculum provided by the NYC Department of Health. A different fruit or vegetable is highlighted each week, with a corresponding healthy eating lesson plan. Workshops occur alongside our free, weekly produce distributions at the Wolcott Street Farm, located in the Red Hook Houses. Over the course of the two-hour distribution, up to 70 community members come to pick up produce. The Chef Educator will repeat the week's workshop 3-4 times over the course of the morning, with the support of a multilingual outreach staff member.
Weekly administrative work is required to document the public workshops, as well as other related program prep tasks, such as purchasing ingredients. Depending on availability, other additional
opportunities to support farm programming may arise throughout the season - such as our annual Harvest Festival in October. The position starts the week of June 24, with July 5 as the first Friday we
offer workshops. The workshops conclude on Friday, November 15. No workshops are scheduled the Friday of Labor Day weekend, August 30. This position pays $28/hour for a maximum of 8 hours
of work per week.

**ESSENTIAL DUTIES + RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Prep and host weekly cooking and nutrition workshops for the public on the Wolcott farm (Fridays, 8am-1pm);
- Work with farm team members to ensure a smooth workshop flow, manage crowds, and ensure community members have a positive learning experience;
- Support set up and breakdown of tables, tents, and chairs each week;
- Purchase weekly ingredients needed for cooking demos using provided petty cash;
- Submit receipts, change, and workshop logs weekly;
- Maintain a clean and organized supply and equipment inventory;
- Administrative and other related reporting and documentation tasks
- May be assigned other duties and responsibilities as determined by the _Red Hook Farms Director._

**EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills & Personal Attributes)**
- 2-3 years experience teaching others about cooking, especially outdoors / in a non-formal environment such as a farmers market;
- Background in nutrition education and healthy eating;
- Interest in local food / food justice movement;
- Ability to adapt curriculum to suit a diverse population in terms of age, race, and language;
- Able to work outdoors and in inclement weather;
- NYC Food Handler license (preferred);
- Proficiency in spoken Spanish and/or Mandarin (preferred);
- Familiarity with the Red Hook community.

**WORKING CONDITIONS (ENVIRONMENT) & PHYSICAL DEMANDS**
