**Job Title**: Assistant Environmental Health Specialist
**Department**: Miami County Health Department
Responsibility: An Assistant Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for assisting with Environmental Programs for the Miami County Health Department. This includes but is not limited to ensuring proper implementation of sanitation requirements, policies, codes, and laws with accuracy.
**Required Education**:
- High School Diploma or HSE.
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain Environmental Certifications, such as but not limited to:
- ServSafe
- Pool & Spa
- Vector
- Indiana On-site Wastewater Professional Association (IOWPA)
- Lead Testing
- Vector
- FEMA
**Duties**:
- Incumbent serves as Assistant Environmental Health Specialist for the Miami County Health Department, responsible for assisting the Environmental Supervisor with environmental health related programs.
- Assists with and/or performs investigations of public complaints, including but not limited to, unsanitary conditions, public and semi-public pools, food establishments, water wells, lead testing, tattoo parlors, onsite sewage, and any other environmental issues that pertain to the job.
- Maintains records of inspection data, prepares and submits reports, and provides summaries of regulatory and administrative action to supervisor.
- Assists with the collection of air, vector, and drinking and surface water samples for laboratory analysis.
- Assists and participates in emergency preparedness activities such as drills, mass prophylaxis clinic, and education regarding man-made and natural disasters.
- Assists with Health First Indiana funding (HFI).
- Assists with activities, complaints, and investigations of public health importance.
Job Requirements:
- Knowledge of the standard principles and practices of environmental health.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to all phases of environmental health.
- Ability to take initiative and accountability for specific assigned environmental programs and tasks.
- Ability to plan, schedule, and conduct field inspections, maintain accurate records, and prepare factual reports.
- Ability to properly operate standard office equipment, including computer, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, and digital camera.
- Ability to and/or knowledge of computer programs and web sites and how to properly use them to perform the job requirements. Examples: Excel, Word, Power Point, Adobe, iWorQ, GeoPermits, and Health Soft.
- Ability to safely operate, protect, and maintain a variety of hand and/or power tools, such as push probe, laser, tape measure, level, clinometer, compass, GPS and thermometer.
- Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
- Shall comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), vendors, engineers, and public in a courteous and tactful manner, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
- Ability to work alone with minimum supervision, and with others in a team environment, work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure.
- Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate or difficult persons.
- Ability to compile, compare, analyze, investigate and evaluate data, coordinate, and make determinations based on data analysis.
- Ability to count, compute, and make arithmetic calculations.
- Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
- Ability to testify in legal proceedings and court as required.
- Ability to occasionally work extended, evening, and/or weekend hours and travel out of town, sometimes overnight, for meetings and training conferences.
- Ability to respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis from off-duty status, and serve on call on rotation basis.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record. - Other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements:
- Incumbent maintains considerable contact with the public and may be exposed to difficult persons.
- Ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
