Kalamazoo Defender is an independent non-profit organization that provides legal representation to the adult indigent population charged with a crime within Kalamazoo County. We take a holistic approach, employing compassionate professionals who work with our clients to identify and address additional needs beyond their legal case. In collaboration with our robust network of area service providers, we aim to connect our clients to relevant support services.

Our job is to be their zealous defender in the face of these systemic barriers, fighting for them in court but also organizing care for them in our community.

**THE JOB**:
Kalamazoo Defender is seeking a Research Assistant for an exciting grant project to integrate forensic psychology into our ground-breaking holistic program. This innovative project is a collaboration among staff at Kalamazoo Defender, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists affiliated with the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker School of Medicine, and staff and graduate students of Western Michigan University. This position is funded through December 1, 2025, by an existing grant, after which we anticipate its extension through other funds.

Given this role’s responsibility of collecting, organizing, and communicating information gleaned from clients to the grant team members in other departments, the Research Assistant is crucial to the success of this grant project

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Coordinate recruitment and interviews of research participants in collaboration with other research staff.
- Communicate directly with clients to obtain survey responses by conducting client meetings on-site, as well as at other justice related facilities.
- Work alongside the paralegal team to facilitate court communications, attorney-client communications, and other processes related to the pilot cases used in our research project.
- Maintain detailed and timely case notes and digital files for each client.
- Document research processes as they are developed.
- Generate reports from various databases and develop ways to represent that data to internal audiences.
- Prepare presentations and attend meetings for primary grant team to include psychologists, attorneys, mitigation specialists, and client navigators.
- Perform any other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall effectiveness and success of the grant project and the defense team.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Bachelor’s degree in related field of research required (criminal justice, psychology, legal, sociology); master’s degree desired.
- Prior research experience preferred.
- Work experience in the criminal justice system, mental health field, or other social services field desired.
- Strong commitment to Kalamazoo Defender's mission and values.

- Outstanding organization, detail orientation, and analytical skills.
- Excellent concise and effective verbal and written communication.
- Skill in working with specialized software or datasets.
- Proficiency in a variety of research and analytics databases. (Legal data and analytic product experience a plus.)
- Experience creating, maintaining, and publishing content to an intranet preferred.
- Ability to prioritize work tasks while and adhere to deadlines while working both collaboratively and independently.
- Demonstrated commitment to working in an anti-racist workplace.
