General Summary

The College of Education and Human Development at Western Michigan University (WMU) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position focusing on Artificial Intelligence (Al) and Education beginning in August 2024.

This is an exciting time to join our faculty, as we work collaboratively across the institution to support an innovative, inclusive, and evidence-based set of Al initiatives that will spur advances in 21st-century research and education.


The candidate will hold an appointment in the Department of Educational Leadership, Research & Technology and will be assigned to the Educational & Instructional Technology program.

We seek to hire someone who can fill needed content expertise (Al and education) and provide new energy and perspectives related to graduate curriculum development, teaching, recruiting, retaining and advising students.

This is an opportunity to pursue a research agenda in Al and education that helps WMU stand out as a leader in the field.

Major Duties
Develop and teach courses in Al and its application to education and educational research.

Engage in service activities to promote scholarship and innovations related to Al and Education within the WMU community and beyond.

Advise graduate students and supervise graduate student research.
Establish and maintain scholarly research, publication, and grant writing in the fields of Al and instructional technology.
Develop curriculum in the field of Al in collaboration with disciplines across the university.
Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate in Educational/Instructional Technology, Learning Sciences, Computer Science, or a related field from an accredited institution by August 2024.

Active research agenda or evidence of the potential for an active research agenda related to Al and instructional technology.
Experience teaching adult learners working in industry and/or education.
Desired Qualifications
Evidence of prior publications in books, academic journals, and presentations at national and/or international conferences related to Al.
Expertise in using digital and Al technologies for learning, education, and work.
Experience in working in collaborative and interdisciplinary groups.

Desire to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in underserved and underrepresented populations in education, with evidence of efforts in research and practice.

Success in seeking and securing external research funding.
