This individual performs all duties as a laboratory technologist in the designated section. Assumes responsibility for quality of laboratory testing and resulting. This individual performs Waived, Moderate and High complexity tests as authorized by the Medical Director. This individual may assume responsibility of the General Supervisor/Laboratory Administrative Director in the absences of the General Supervisor/Laboratory Administrative Director.

**Essential Responsibilities**

As Section Coordinator, the employee will perform assigned duties by the General Supervisor/Laboratory Administrative Director as follows:
Follow safety policies and procedures relevant to all assigned duties. Includes, but not limited to OSHA Health and Safety regulations and Universal Precautions. Assumes responsibility to report defective safety equipment or devices hazardous situations, accidents, safety infractions or any unusual incidents.

Be accessible to always testing personnel on-site to resolve technical problems in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Be responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. Review available documents and work-logs daily or on the next routine shift.

Provide day to day supervision of moderate and high complexity test performance by testing personnel.

Review individually the results of high complexity tests performed by other medical laboratory technologists and technicians.

Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test system deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

Ensure that patient tests result of regulated testing to the appropriate organization (e.g., IDPH).

Provide orientation to all testing personnel. Prepare and present didactic lectures (nursing orientation, etc.)

Prepare and participate in internal competency assessment.

Annually evaluate or assist with the evaluation and documentation of the performance of all testing personnel.

Ensure that all laboratory equipment is maintained, serviced and in proper working order. Is responsible for notification of proper service personnel if needed.

Assist in evaluation of products, procedures and quality of work done in laboratory. Must be familiar with all section procedure manuals, updating or deleting when needed.

Oversee the ordering, storage and appropriate use of supplies.

Review daily, weekly, monthly Quality Control Data. Investigate, resolve and document discrepancies. Organize and maintain documentation according to established laboratory policies.

Responsible for the rotation, performance, and reporting of CAP or other proficiency testing surveys within the section.

Assumes responsibility for maintaining the section in a manner that supports the Laboratory Accreditation process. Represents the section during inspections.

Attends Laboratory Management Meetings, and other meetings as directed by the General Supervisor/Laboratory Administrative Director/Medical Laboratory Director/

Assists in the problem-solving process pertaining to patient complaints, lab results, billing inquiries, etc.

Interacts with the General Supervisor/Laboratory Administrative Director on a regular basis to plan priorities of work to be completed.

**As Testing Personnel will**:
Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Remain at various workstations for long periods of time with ability to move freely from work area to work area.

Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all Q.C. activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever tests systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable level of performance.

Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problem or immediately notify the General Supervisor.

Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

Perform all manual tasks necessary for testing procedures; perform microscopic examination of specimens, slides and visual inspection of agglutination tests.

Participate in Continuing Education, In-House and outside seminars, reading, etc.

Assists in various areas of the laboratory by performing tasks specifically assigned by the General Supervisor/Laboratory Administrative Director. Perform phlebotomy functions if needed.

Learn advance instrumentation and follow through problems and service as related to those instruments.
