General Statement

Under supervision, coordinates the architectural design and planning activities of the Structural and Architectural Design Section. Performs the most difficult architectural work in connection with layouts, plans and details.

Essential Job Functions

Assigns, supervises and reviews work of subordinate personnel; rewards, disciplines, directs or adjusts grievances of other employees or effectively recommends their hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion or discharge. Supervises the preparation of architectural plans and specifications. Provides and prepares the necessary criteria and other information needed for document development of architectural contracts, including sketches, drawings, details and specifications. Coordinates architectural design activities with the activities of other design disciplines in order to meet District needs within established budget, time and regulatory constraints. Supervises the preparation of correspondence from contractors as well as other sections during design and construction phases of projects. Supervises the preparation of cost estimates and design calculations for architectural components of projects. Manages consultant professional services contracts relative to architectural design work to ensure that the design schedule will be met on time and within budget. Prepares design parameters for architectural components of projects; coordinates the parameters with other sections. Communicates with staff members from other departments and sections, contractors, and vendors.

Other Job Functions

Checks architectural plans and details prepared by others. Contacts municipal, state and federal agencies to prepare and request permits for authority to perform work within their jurisdiction; coordinates assigned projects. Reviews leases, right-of-ways, and land use plans for District properties. Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of architecture. Thorough knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and data base management software. Thorough knowledge of state and local construction practices, rules and regulations. Thorough knowledge of construction materials, the various trades and their jurisdictional boundaries. Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in architecture. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to review architectural drawings with accompanying explanatory comments. Ability to coordinate the activities of architectural design consultants. Ability to prepare architectural drawings and make feasibility studies for building and renovation projects. Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Absolute Requirements

Registration as an Architect by the State of Illinois.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited five year college or university majoring in architecture or architectural engineering and six years of experience in architecture, three years of which must have been at the full professional level.

Substitution

Graduate study in architecture or architectural engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Professional or sub-professional architecture or architectural engineering experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

One year of experience with the District as a Senior Architect. Civil service status as a Senior Architect.
