The Director of Research and Grants has direct responsibility for the organization’s grant programs and grant funding partnerships, from sourcing of proposals through grant review, contracting, and management, to communication of the programs and the evaluation of their long-term success. The Director of Research and Grants is also responsible for cultivating a diverse community of researchers focused on FTD through networking, training, mentorship, or funding opportunities. A key member of the Research team, the Director of Research and Grants is an expert in FTD research topics, represents AFTD in external initiatives, contributes to the planning of Research events, and supports AFTD decision-making on research-related initiatives.

**FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES**

**Essential Job Functions**
- ** Direct AFTD research funding programs**
- In collaboration with the Senior Director of Scientific Initiatives, members of the Medical Advisory Council, and the AFTD Research Committee, identify funding priorities and criteria for Requests for Funding Proposals.
- Direct the grant review process, recruiting appropriate chairs and reviewers with diverse expertise, and providing appropriate infrastructure for best practice principles.
- Identify and implement best practices for the structure and terms of standing and ad-hoc review panels.
- Communicate identified, constructive reviewer feedback to applicants.
- Maintain connections with FTD researchers including both reviewers and applicants. Develop supportive relationships with grant recipients during and after funding periods to support career development, assess progress, and to build community.
- For partner-funded programs, represent AFTD values and priorities as a proactive liaison to partner organizations. For example, help evaluate proposal eligibility, recruit FTD experts for grant review, and steward active grants to help advance FTD research goals.
- On an ongoing basis, evaluate funding partnerships. Communicate opportunities and challenges to the Senior Director as well as to the AFTD Board of Directors Research Committee and to major donors.
- **Cultivate an FTD research community**
- With support from the Research Outreach Manager, develop a diverse, collaborative research community through training, mentorship, and networking programs.
- Support special research initiatives as assigned, providing scientific expertise and/or project management.
- **Ensure that scientific advances in FTD and the scientific investments by AFTD are evaluated, celebrated, and communicated to AFTD stakeholders**
- With support from the Research Outreach Manager and the Administrative Assistant, Research, oversee the maintenance of researcher and grants databases.
- Provide scientific expertise to inform and support research-relevant activities across the organization.
- Develop and report on metrics to evaluate the success of programs under their responsibility, monitor evolving best practices, identify areas of weakness, and recommend strategies for improvement.
- In collaboration with colleagues in Development & Communications and with support from the Research Outreach Manager and the Administrative Assistant, Research, increase awareness of AFTD research grants and other initiatives to support the research community, maintain public-facing materials as current, and develop regular communications to the AFTD Research Committee, FTD-focused researchers, and the broader FTD stakeholder community.

**Other Job Functions**
- Represent AFTD as staff liaison to external research initiatives.
- Present and/or moderate scientific sessions at conferences
- Serve as an internal expert on FTD science, interpreting advances for colleagues, answering questions, and reviewing written summaries for accuracy
- Conscientiously follows company policies and practices and takes care of organizational property.
- Other duties as assigned.
- 15-30% travel for conferences and meetings as needed
