The Literacy and Humanities Coordinator is responsible for planning, development, implementation and evaluation of curriculum and professional development within the areas of Language Arts, Literacy, and History and Social Studies.
- Establish and promote high standards and expectations for students and staff for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
- Provide educational leadership in the development of curriculum and the implementation of instructional approaches of the district, including the evaluation of classroom instruction on a regular basis.
- Ensure coordination of services and articulation between and among schools.
- Provide educational leadership for literacy and humanities, including:

- Focus on individual student performance;
- Vertical and horizontal articulation of skills and content sequence;
- Effective and efficient utilization of instructional resources; and
- Identify literacy as reading, writing, speaking, listening and thinking;
- Coaching to support the development of each teacher’s reading and writing instructional pedagogy.
- Ensure that the instructional practices engage the learner in tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, problem solving and creativity, that they address each student’s needs, interests and skill levels, that they encourage the student to define individual goals and accept responsibility for learning, and that they provide a variety of methods for the student to independently demonstrate performance and achievement.
- Collect and analyze performance data including, but not limited to, State and district assessment regarding the achievement of students, work samples, and other pertinent information affecting the design and evaluation of curriculum and instructional practices.
- Organize professional development, and ongoing curriculum development.
- Provide professional development and support to coaches on coaching teachers and the coaching cycle.
- Participate in PLCs on looking at student work with teachers, coaches and principals.
- In collaboration with building principals, observe classroom instruction to evaluate curriculum implementation (content, materials, pedagogy, pace and standards), student performance, and program effectiveness.
- Collaborates with school administrators on the supervision and evaluation of program staff.
- Remain current in the research that supports curriculum development, instructional program design and delivery, and assessment in literacy and humanities.
- Continue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth experiences.
- Summarize, interpret and disseminate current developments in instruction, learning theory and cognitive research through reading of professional journals, participation in professional development and involvement in professional organizations.
- Recommend budget line items and coordinate the purchasing of instructional materials and equipment within literacy and humanities.
- Demonstrate initiative, effective organizational and communication skills and the ability to motivate people.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and the interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
- Attends DESE and other related outside organizational meetings
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned

**Qualifications Required**:

- MA DESE licensure in Supervisor/Director;
- Master’s Degree in Reading, English, Humanities, Social Studies or other educational area;
- Demonstrated success with curriculum development and implementation;
- Experience in collaborative educational environment and shared decision-making;
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with others; ability to work with and support diverse learners;
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required

**Qualifications Preferred**:

- Bilingual Spanish
- Dual certification in ESL and/or Moderate Disabilities

**Terms**:
In accordance with the contract with the Chelsea Administrators’ Association (CAA). The work year for this position is 215 days. See CPS website for salary information.
