The Department's main goal is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to serve and protect life and property and the Department works to continually educate the public in fire, life safety and disaster preparedness, along with enforcing public safety codes. Since its inception in 1865, FDNY has helped lead efforts to make New York the safest big city in the nation. This accomplishment requires a steadfast and daily commitment to maintaining the Department's core values.

The Fire Department, City of New York, seeks a full-time Associate Fire Protection Inspector in the Bureau of Fire Prevention/Laboratory Unit. The Lab Unit field inspector will perform citywide technical field inspections involving; hazardous materials stored and used in chemical, research, educational and medical laboratories, medical gas systems and industrial occupancies for compliance with NYC Fire and Building Codes, Rules of the City of New York and applicable NFPA Standards. In addition to issuing permits the field inspector will issue violation orders, FDNY summonses and criminal court summonses, write reports and make recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications1. Five (5) years of full-time experience in or more of the following:
a. the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables;
b. the development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials;
c. the inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored or houses to detect potential fire and explosion hazards;
d. the design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or fire extinguishing systems; or

2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years.

License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York.

Preferred SkillsExtensive knowledge of the NYC Fire & Building Codes, Rules of the City of New York and NFPA Standards. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and proficiency in Accela is highly preferred. College graduate is highly preferred. High school diploma and at least 5 years of experience as a Fire Protection Inspector will also be considered. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to read SDS sheets and approved plans.- 55a ProgramThis position is also open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program.
