Job description

**Position Summary**

**Phlebotomists are responsible for assisting medical assistants and physicians by performing venipuncture on patients in assigned areas within the practice, and prepares these specimens for delivery to indicated laboratories.**

Primary responsibilities:

- Performs phlebotomy on patients for required tests.
- Draws the correct number and types to tubes on properly identified patients.
- Ascertains tubes contain sufficient samples.
- Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen.
- Bands tubes according to labs as per established protocols and places tubes in carriers.
- Prepares donor assessments, checks vital signs, medical history and accurately documents the results for all potential donors as per established protocols.
- Communicates any problems or issues and alerts management accordingly.
- Keeps work area in a clean and orderly condition. Safely disposes of contaminated equipment and maintains a safe working environment.
- Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required
- Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% correct.
- Properly package specimens for transport
- Answer telephone calls, read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

- Responsible for following and monitoring OSHA & CLIA guidelines/regulations at all times
- Fully stocks phlebotomy stations.
- Ensures all equipment is maintained per appropriate regulations/guidelines
- Maintains patient confidentiality 100% of the time; demonstrates complete discretion when discussing patient information - adherence to all HIPAA guidelines
- Maintains an organized and clean work area

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Extensive standing and walking. Occasional lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent exposure to potentially infectious agents, communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a medical office. Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.

**Qualifications**:

- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Certified Phlebotomist highly preferred.
- Experience in a hospital/clinic laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Strong positive interpersonal skills; can effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- High degree of initiative and sense of organization.
