The Director evaluates and recommends School-specific policies, guidelines, and standards for research administration to School leadership, ensuring alignment with regulatory frameworks and contractual obligations. This position also delves into complex contract terms, assessing their implications on pre- and post-award operations. By synthesizing this information, they develop nuanced strategies for the School and its research community to navigate the intricate landscape of compliance. In close collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Research Operations and other School leaders, they orchestrate initiatives to roll out and implement new policy and compliance requirements across the School, fostering a culture of adherence and excellence in research administration.

Duties include:
- Researches and interprets policies related to research administration to ensure adherence to federal, state, sponsor and institutional requirements. Monitors compliance issues and trends, promptly identifying and escalating high-risk situations for leadership awareness or action.Formulates and proposes mitigations to address risks and resolve complex contractual issues effectively.Reviews terms of complex contracts, subcontracts, and non-federal awards to assess their risk and potential liabilities. Recommends whether Stanford/School of Medicine should accept risk and potential liability.Develops and manages the School's outreach strategy for research administration policy and compliance issues and updates. Crafts the communication plan and messaging and supports the Assistant Dean of Research Operations in its delivery and execution.Represents the School in forums and on issues with the University including the Office of Sponsored Research, Office of Technology Licensing, Dean of Research, Office of General Counsel, and Office of the Chief Risk Officer (includes Privacy).Serves as the escalation point for RMG on non-standard, complex issues, coordinating as needed with faculty, department staff and Stanford Medicine and University offices. Responsible for the hiring, management and development of five staff.This position has delegated responsibility and institutional signature authority for School of Medicine sponsored projects.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of concepts, policies and processes, and regulatory requirements associated with the development, implementation, and administration of multi-site or large-scale grants, contracts, clinical studies and complex projects.Thorough understanding of liability, regulatory compliance, intellectual property and licensing issues as they pertain to research.Working knowledge of and experience applying regulatory requirements regarding research data and privacy, including HIPAA and GDPR as applied to research.Advanced knowledge of contracting and related processes for complex agreements including fee-for-service and non-sponsored research-related agreements.Experience as institutional official with delegated signature authority
Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

The expected pay range for this position is $163,000 to $204,000 per annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
