Unit Mission Statement:James Monroe's Highland is the historic property of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, and is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Highland has been a unit of William & Mary since 1974. Highland studies the history of the residents of Highland, including James Monroe and many families of enslaved men and women on the property. Highland promotes scholarship, and shares history with academic and public audiences. The study of history inspires imaginations and contributes in future-oriented ways to our academic and public communities. Highland provides a variety of educational and community programs.
Position Summary:The Lead Interpreter at Highland is a regularly-scheduled front-line guide, and works in coordination with the Education Program Manager. The Lead Interpreter has year-round responsibility for teaching the site's historic content.
Interpreters provide historic content to members of the visiting public, to school groups, and during events.
Other responsibilities include:
Monitor exhibits and ensure safety of visitors and security of collections.
Respond to visitor questions and provide additional historic information, as needed.
Provide administrative support to the Highland team with duties such as engagement of tour group operators, visitors, and donors, and event administration.
This is an hourly, non-benefited position up to 26 hours a week.
This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
The employee is expected to work a 3-day/wk schedule most of the year, including some weekend hours and occasional evenings.
All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 27 hours per week, throughout a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.

Required Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent
Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge of the colonial and early national periods of American history.
Commitment to engaging in truthful and inclusive historical narratives
Skills for engaging with diverse public audience, which could include empathy, imagination, and/or traditional teaching methods.
Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, including enthusiasm for increasing skills in public speaking, narrative storytelling, and selection and sharing of appropriate detail
Attention to visitor needs for a positive site experience.
Computer competencies such as Outlook, Word, and Excel and willingness to learn and use appropriate new technologies.
Previous engagement with study and presentation of American history, teaching at any level.
Previous work experience interacting with the public.
Prior experience with written and oral communications in a professional setting
