Job Summary
Join us in Hampton, NJ, as a Senior Motor Control Software Engineer and be at the forefront of innovation In this exciting role, you'll lead the way in Firmware/Software development, Power Electronics solutions, and Motor Control and Sensors Design across a diverse range of products. You'll support the production of our Precision Fastening Tools and Controllers, impacting both our IR assembly plants and supplier locations. Responsibilities
  • Create detailed motor controls execution plans that align with program budget and schedule constraints
  • Develop front end engineering documentation such as block diagrams and control theories
  • Specify hardware solutions that meet product design specifications
  • Knowledge of motor control systems, including sensor feedback, slip-based control, closed-loop position, speed and torque control, and field-oriented control (FOC)
  • Proficiency in simulation and design software tools for electromagnetic, and thermal analysis, such as ANSYS Motor-CAD and Maxwell, COMSOL, Simcenter MotorSolve, SPEED, Altair FluxMotor, and MATLAB/Simulink including, but not limited to:
    • Calculation of magnetic circuits and flux paths to achieve the desired performance characteristics
    • Determination of the number of poles, slots, and winding configurations based on the application requirements
    • Optimization of the air gap, magnetic materials, and core geometry to maximize magnetic flux density and minimize losses
    • Evaluation of temperature distribution within the motor to prevent overheating and ensure thermal stability
    • Determination of cooling methods, such as natural convection, forced convection, depending on the application
    • Selection of materials for rotors, stators, and bearings to withstand mechanical and environmental stresses
    • Design of the motor windings to achieve the desired electromagnetic properties and minimize losses
    • Selection of insulation materials and systems to ensure electrical performance, reliability, and safety
    • Optimization of motor performance characteristics, including torque-speed curves, power factor, and power density.
  • Analog & digital sensor knowledge and integration
  • Awareness of various position and current sense methods and components including hall cells, encoders, and resolvers
Qualifications
  • Master or PhD degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechatronic engineering, or equivalent degree with a focus on control systems
  • Minimum of 10 years in industrial motor controls development
  • Applicable knowledge of various digital communication protocols such as: SPI, I2C, RS485
  • Knowledge of process hazard analysis, SIL, and safety rated devices
  • Awareness of industry standards and regulations, such as IEC, NEMA, UL, or specific application standards for safety, performance, and environmental considerations
  • Awareness of EMC requirements relevant to the design of power converters
  • Develop test and diagnostics software to support bench testing
  • Review and evaluation of product design through informal and formal design reviews as well as through design verification test plans and reports.
  • Support manufacturing with product electronic troubleshooting
  • Testing and troubleshooting experience

Travel & Work Arrangements/Requirements
  • Based onsite in Hampton, NJ
  • 25 % travel as needed
  • US Citizen or lawful Permanent Resident
