Animal Technician

Pay: $21.50/hour
Schedule: M-F 7:30am-3:30pm

Overview
[The Client] is an industry-leading organization focused on advancing research through the humane care and maintenance of research animals. In this role, you will be working with dedicated professionals to ensure the well-being of research animals, contributing to significant scientific discoveries.
Responsibilities:
Animal Technician I:

Monitor and record animal health daily.
Feed and provide water to mice, rats, and other species.
Transfer animals between cages as needed.
Monitor and record room environment, including keeping records of environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and humidity), performing janitorial tasks such as sweeping and mopping, and ensuring adequate supplies in the room.
Comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies on animal care and facility sanitation.
Assist in resolving issues in animal care to maintain standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Animal Technician II:


Perform all job functions and essential duties and responsibilities of Animal Technician I.

Animal Technician III:


Perform all job functions and essential duties and responsibilities of Animal Technician I and II.
Provide more specialized services such as breeding management, receiving animals from vendors, animal quarantine, animal shipment, and training of other Animal Technicians.

Animal Technician Lead:


Perform all job functions and essential duties and responsibilities of Animal Technician I, II, and III.
Provide more specialized services such as breeding management, receiving animals from vendors, animal quarantine, animal shipment, and training of other Animal Technicians.
Recognize and communicate signs of ill health and behavioral problems to the veterinarian, as well as administer minor treatments to animals as prescribed by the Veterinarian.
Collect blood, fecal, and fur samples from sentinel animals for rodent health monitoring and perform various quality assurance tests with accurate records to ensure the maintenance of facility hygiene standards.
Assist in finding creative solutions to problems posed by projects and/or building subtenants.
Monitor and provide summaries of animal census by room and project.

Qualifications:
For All Levels:


High School Diploma or equivalent

Animal Technician I:


ALAT (Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician) certification desirable.
Up to 1 year of animal husbandry experience.
Ability to read, write, and follow instructions written in English precisely.
Familiarity with mechanical cage washing equipment and autoclaves.
Knowledge and proper use of personal protective equipment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Animal Technician II:


ALAT required or become eligible for certification within 6 months of obtaining the position; LAT (Laboratory Animal Technician) desired.
2 – 4 years of animal husbandry experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read, write, and follow instructions written in English precisely.
Familiarity with mechanical cage washing equipment and autoclaves.
Knowledge and proper use of personal protective equipment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Animal Technician III:


LAT required or become eligible for certification within 6 months of obtaining the position.
4 – 6 years of animal husbandry experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read, write, and follow instructions written in English precisely.
Familiarity with mechanical cage washing equipment and autoclaves.
Knowledge and proper use of personal protective equipment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Other Special Requirements for All Levels:


No personal ownership of rodents or other animals that eat rodents as a part of their diet is allowed, to prevent contamination with research rodents.
Participation in weekend and holiday animal care rotation schedule.
Must participate in the occupational health program for animal care workers.

Behavioral Competencies Required for All Levels:


Attention to detail.
Strong work ethic and ability to function as part of a team dynamic.
Ability to work collaboratively.

Physical Demands Required for All Levels:


Physical activity including bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, or lifting up to 40 lbs.
Extended periods of standing.
Ability to don and doff Personal Protective Equipment repeatedly during the day, which requires standing on one leg while placing on shoe covers.
Potential work with, precautions against, and/or immunization against potentially hazardous agents, including chemical hazards and BSL-2 biohazards.
