Sevee & Maher Engineers, Inc. (SME) has a new full-time position for a Senior Chemist or Senior Scientist based at our office in greater Chicago. The position can be arranged as remote, in-office, or a hybrid of remote and in-office.

Position Summary

This role will independently lead product stewardship client project delivery, with the assistance from chemists, scientists, or chemical engineers, in the areas of consumer product chemical safety and food contact global regulatory compliance. Provide technical training to chemists, scientists or chemical engineers. This position reports to a principal of the company.   


Essential Responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility in managing client accounts, project delivery, and communication, and maintaining client relationships.
  • Design food contact compliance related testing protocols, work with testing labs for quoting, coordinating testing, and problem-solving during the testing process.
  • Conduct chemical risk assessments and Prop 65 exposure assessments and write reports.
  • Lead food contact regulatory submissions to the US and international government agencies.
  • Monitor global, U.S. federal, and state regulatory developments in the areas of clients’ interests; provide regulatory updates to clients; guide clients in navigating regulatory landscapes; and provide implementable regulatory compliance strategies.
  • Conduct literature research on specific scientific or regulatory subjects of clients’ interests and write white papers.
  • Work with clients’ supply chains to obtain required regulatory and client-specific documentation for review.


Required Skills and Qualifications·       

  • B.S. or higher degree in chemistry or other relevant science or engineering areas
  • Minimum 8 years working experience in food contact regulatory compliance or the food contact related manufacturing industry
  • In-depth knowledge in chemicals and materials; good knowledge in analytical chemistry and packaging sustainability (including recycled or compostable materials)
  • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practice
  • Working knowledge in toxicology is a plus
  • Literature research capability and attention to details
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and project management skills to keep tasks on schedule and on budget
  • Enjoy problem solving and teamwork
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, technical report writing, data interpretation, and reporting.
