MAIN FUNCTION:

Coordinates and manages in collaboration with the Emergency Department Director all nursing care activities based on the philosophy of the Arnot Ogden Medical Center using initiative and independent judgment to provide the best available services to patients. As Clinical Coordinator, in the absence of the Director and in collaboration with, accountable for all patient care activities, department operation and staff function. The Clinical Coordinator is responsible with the ED Educator, for assisting with ongoing ED inservice programs, coordination of orientation and teaching of new employees and ongoing inservice programs, supports the Director in carrying out unit goals, and is the primary representative of the Director. The Clinical Coordinator informs the Director of activities in the department, including customer service and quality improvement issues as well as necessary just in time education needs. The Clinical Coordinator will provide additional educational opportunities and support for off shift.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Clinical Coordinator reports to the Director of the Emergency Department and assumes responsibility for the management of nursing, clerical and assistant personnel, equipment, supplies, and Emergency Department environment. The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for labor and non-labor budget control, enforcement and compliance with staff.

The Clinical Coordinator assists the Director with monthly staff meetings and documentation of minutes and ongoing interdepartmental communication.

The Clinical Coordinator assists the Director with departmental Quality Improvement activities through interaction with staff and delegation to same during down time.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

** 1. Maintains confidentiality while serving as a professional liaison.

** 2. Represents the hospital in a professional, courteous manner to patients, families and members of the health care team while being sensitive to how others perceive both verbal and non-verbal communications.

** 3. Develops, interprets and supports Medical Center/nursing department policies to members of the Emergency Department, all staff.

** 4. Maintains collaborative relationships with all members of the Emergency Department staff including selection of clinical experiences for health care students and clarification of supplier/customer requirements.

** 5. Demonstrates effective time management, flexibility and priority setting. Ability to perform duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.

** 6. Serves as a professional role model for staff and students by maintaining knowledge and expertise to clinical area.

** 7. Promotes and ensures the delivery of quality patient care through competency based assignments and supervision of staff. Assists with staff orientation to charge nurse role.

** 8. Supports the philosophy and objectives of the Emergency Department.

** 9. Ensures the utilization of the nursing process in maintaining quality of standards of practice and standards of care.

** 10. Develops leadership skills of staff and delegates responsibility appropriately.

** 11. Demonstrates appropriate problem solving and decision making skills.

** 12. Assists in responding to staff regarding grievances and problems and refers them to appropriate resources as necessary.

** 13. Promotes a healthy working environment through effective communication, conflict resolution, and staff empowerment.

** 14. Promotes intershift communication among staff members to achieve continuity of nursing care.

** 15. Serves as a liaison between Emergency Department staff, nursing units and ancillary departments in conjunction with Director to maintain a collaborative working relationship.

** 16. Collaborates with Director in organizing and conducting unit staff meetings.

** 17. Demonstrates willingness to accept non-routine work assignments as appropriate which may include the following:

a. Collaborates with the Director and Educator in developing annual written goals and objectives for the Emergency Department.

b. Anticipates, monitors, and adjusts human and material resources appropriate to volume and patient acuity.

c. Collaborates with the Director and Educator with maintaining the nursing quality improvement process to improve patient care to the greatest extent possible using an approach, which is systematic, planned, and outcome oriented.

d. Collaborates with Director with selection, development, evaluation, counseling, and disciplining of employees as appropriate.

e. Assists with coordination of a staffing pattern to provide continuity of patient care.

f. Assists the Director with implementing appropriate review systems for competency based appraisals of staff.

g. Participates in nursing/hospital and unit committees as appropriate.

h. Collaborates with the Emergency Department Director in developing and monitoring the operating budget.

i. Willing to accept additional responsibilities and duties related to the operation of the department.

** 18. Assists ED Educator with orientation of new employees, as defined by department guidelines and serves as a resource person.

** 19. Responds, and assumes appropriate role in emergency codes/situations.

** 20. Demonstrates awareness of need for self-growth by assessing strengths and weaknesses and establishing written goals and objectives.

** 21. Provides patient care when necessary utilizing the nursing process.

** 22. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in department. the individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess date reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements as to age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the appropriate policy and procedures.

EDUCATION:

1. Current New York State Registered Nurse Licensure.

2. Previous nursing administration management experience/knowledge desirable.

3. Excellent communication and writing ability.

CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
