The Sr. Specialist, Architectural Planning serve as experts in the work of defining and refining the program standards and communicating project specific scope using Best Buy’s floor plan, prototype design, fixture and merchandise layouts, and building design standards to create site specific floor plans, merchandise and fixture layouts, and supporting documentation used as the basis for construction and contract documents and specifications. These documents serve as the basis for the architectural/MEP/structural documentation, and specifications used for permitting activities and construction bidding and execution. The role is responsible for coordinating Best Buy’s internal documentation which serve to meet and maintain the needs of the business on a site-specific basis and external documentation which react to localized site conditions, building codes and other challenges that have space impact that arise during development or deployment of any physical Best Buy building project. This role communicates and coordinates with internal teams on upcoming business changes ensuring merchandising standards are met across the project and portfolio, as well as external consultants regarding local or site-specific requirements that may impact a site’s specific layout.

To be successful, the individual will need to possess a strong owner’s representative mentality that drives the facilitation, and maximization of ongoing business growth across Best Buy’s real estate portfolio. This role collaborates across multiple stakeholders translating design directives and merchant strategy into prototype as applicable, and then site-specific layouts that provide the best value for the overall project, reset, new or remodeled facility. Developing leadership and strong engagement skills, drafting acumen, attention to details and standards, and an ability to organize and prioritize workload around the accurate and timely execution over multiple locations and multiple milestone waves of projects at one time are requirements for this position.

The Sr Specialist of Architectural Planning is directly responsible for the quality of drawings to meet BBY standards, local code compliance, and to be fully coordinated and current in a timely and concise manner driving milestone completion and communicating across multiple outside consultants and internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Architectural Planning
  • Understands and enforces Best Buy’s standards, prototypical layouts, and site-specific documents to translate the business and merchant strategy into the development of project specific plans, fixture and merchandise layouts, details, and specifications, that align these strategies to any unique site specific conditions, layouts, and local requirements.
  • Drive and communicate major milestone accountability across multiple locations and waves.
  • Drive internal and external communication and milestone reporting accuracy related to plan changes across multiple locations.
  • Works closely with Architectural Planning Associate Managers and outside consultants to understand requirements for development and documentation of building projects, technical details, and unique code and/or lease requirements as well as jurisdictional approval timelines, and creates creative an consistent solutions where necessary that meet the needs of the business and these requirements.
  • Partners closely utilizing a service mindset with the Space Management team to ensure proper milestones and targets around product assortment, adjacencies and plan turnover expectations are delivered site by site.
  • Nurture and develop relationships and communication clearly and on time expectations around work with key business partners such as Space Management, Environmental Design, SEPM, GNFR, Construction, Deployment, Legal, Finance, and Contract Management teams.
  • Identifies, qualifies, and quantifies/prioritizes and communicates risks to leadership. Creates mitigation and contingency plans and assign risk management owners as necessary.
  • Integrates and supports the goal of “team” spirit throughout the Store Experience Design Department.
  1. P&L Management with additional focus on annual budget capital/expense value targeting
  • Annual score carding of all consultants, trades and vendors with a >$1million book of business with the Enterprise.
  • All projects in store experience with >$100k and $500K require a minimum 3 quotes/bids per project.
  • Develops and manages to IER budget for multiple consultant contracts/trades across each project.
  • Plays a key role in the development and value targeting of business/investment plans that affect the Store Experience function and works with the Store Experience leadership team to ensure plans support the achievement of company objectives and strategy while maintaining the strategy and integrity of the overall Store Experience.
  • Evaluates and makes available timely and accurate analyses of budgets, project proposals, project completions and use learnings from each project to enhance future executions.
  1. Enterprise Approach for Architectural Planning
  • Drives an Enterprise approach in shared design documentation, material specifications, construction methodology, and approach to architecture providing leadership, and best practices.
  • Maximizes material specifications for durability and value and looks for opportunities to leverage purchasing.
  • Works collaboratively with local country stakeholders on advancing quality improvement and priorities that support our collective strategy.
  • Represents Best Buy externally to vendors, partners and industry leaders.
  1. Leadership and People Development
  • Manage and mentors’ team around BBY standards to ensure high-quality work.
  • Create a supportive team environment that stresses the importance of collaboration and team learning, including professional growth from successes and failures.
Minimum requirements:
  • 3+ years of drafting, design, planning, architectural, or engineering experience, deploying design and production of design elements/materials while working with cross functional groups.
  • 3+ years of retail experience, working with cross functional store leadership and delivering solutions to improve/fuel overall customer experience, customer retention and customer growth.
  • 3+ years AutoCAD/Revit or equivalent drafting or space management experience.
