IDB Invest - Principal Officer/Lead Officer – Debt Capital Markets and Structured Finance

Location: Washington DC, USA

The IDB Group is a community of diverse, versatile, and passionate people who come together on a journey to improve lives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our people find purpose and do what they love in an inclusive, collaborative, agile, and rewarding environment.

About this position

We are looking for an experienced professional in Debt Capital Markets and Structured Finance to join its Debt Capital Markets and Structured Finance team within the Financial Products and Services Division as Principal/Lead Officer.

The Investment Operations Department (INO) is responsible for generating a portfolio of high quality, creditworthy, and environmentally and socially sound projects that result in significant developmental impact. The business cycle goes from the identification, selection, origination, structuring, and execution of transactions to their monitoring.

The Financial Products and Services Division (FNP) works closely with the Segment divisions to provide product-structuring expertise in the following broad range of products and services: blended finance, capital markets solutions, equity and mezzanine, trade and supply chain finance, and resource mobilization.

The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Debt Capital Markets and Structured Finance (DCM&SF). The DCM&SF team plays a crucial role in originating and executing sustainable projects financed in the debt capital markets – such as Green, Social, Sustainable, and Sustainability-Linked bonds. This includes origination, due diligence, structuring, and legal documentation, all conducted in close collaboration with the Infrastructure and Energy, Corporates and Financial Institutions Divisions, Advisory Services, Blended Finance, Credit Risk, Legal, and Development Effectiveness teams.

What you’ll do:

As Principal Officer or Lead Officer, your key responsibilities will be:

  • Origination and Deal Execution: Support the origination of Structured Finance and Debt Capital Markets solutions and lead the execution of deals. This includes evaluating, structuring, negotiating, and closing new transactions. Apply strong negotiation and problem-solving skills to develop innovative financial engineering solutions and resolve challenges in both straightforward and sophisticated deals. The ideal candidate will have expertise in drafting term sheets, reviewing key contracts, and collaborating closely with legal teams on securities and securitization documentation.
  • Risk Management and Coordination: Collaborate with various risk disciplines (credit, legal, compliance, reputational, operational, etc.) to develop a comprehensive view of structured finance and bond transactions. Provide guidance to internal teams to enhance the first line of defense, supporting management in filtering and prioritizing potential transactions, thereby increasing the efficiency of the team's execution capabilities and overall delivery.
  • Client Value and Development Impact: Focus on delivering value to IDB Invest’s clients by finding practical technical solutions to sector challenges and achieving sustainable development impact.
  • Market Analysis & Insight: Collaborate within the team and across IDB Invest for developing regional capital markets and structured finance strategies and support related promotion work, including marketing, mobilization of other investors, and communications.
  • Team Development: Lead project teams, mentor, develop junior staff, build talent, and grow skill base of staff.

In addition, as Principal Officer your key responsibilities will be:

  • Lead the Structured Finance Franchise: Set strategic direction for Structured Finance efforts, ensuring alignment with the bank's overall objectives and driving the division's growth and success.
  • Scalability and Growth of the Structure Finance Franchise: Drive the scalability and growth of structured finance solutions by developing robust transactional modeling infrastructure and contributing to the standardization of internal processes and procedures.

What you'll need

  • Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field; MBA or relevant advanced degree preferred or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of experience in structured finance, investment banking, or a related field, with a proven track record of leading and executing sophisticated transactions. Strong knowledge of structured finance products, securitization markets, and related regulatory frameworks. Previous experience in developmental finance is preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage and inspire a diverse team.
  • Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of Portuguese is preferable.

Requirements

  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

  • International: International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
