Description

Nature of Work
This is responsible work assisting all parties utilizing the courts in Maury County. Activities associated with the job include opening and closing courtrooms and maintaining a constant presence during court proceedings, making pre-session announcements, and assisting with appropriate order and decorum during court proceedings. Additional activities include providing written notices, instructions and information to individuals attending court proceedings. Incumbents are occasionally subject to potentially life threatening situations involving criminal offenders, associates, and family members and are responsible for responding to emergencies and lock down situations occurring in the Courthouse in accordance with established crisis plans. Job duties require considerable experience working in a correctional facility and/or law enforcement, good organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills, sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job and knowledge of courtroom proceedings and protocol including correctional facility operational policies and procedures. Job performance is evaluated by current Court Judges through review of the efficiency of correctional and courtroom operations, level of control of courtroom proceedings, effectiveness in dealing with inmates and family members, knowledge of court operations and compliance with existing rules and regulations pertaining to judicial activities and courtroom proceedings, and ability to effectively perform the administrative aspects of judicial proceedings.

Illustrative Examples of Work
-Opens and closes courtrooms and maintains a constant presence during court proceedings.
-Makes pre-session announcements to persons attending court.
-Maintains appropriate order and decorum in the courtroom while court is in session.
-Coordinates the involvement of entities utilizing or serving the court including attorneys, probation services, transport officers, victim advocates, pro se litigants, etc.
-Provides written notices to defendants regarding future court dates.
-Provides instructions and information to individuals attending court proceedings.
-Assists law enforcement personnel in the event of disruptive and/or unruly behavior by defendants, associates, plaintiffs and family members when necessary.
-Performs various administrative tasks when required including answering the telephone, copying files, sending Fax's, making copies, etc.
-Interacts with correctional officers, family members, guardians, counselors and associates of individuals taken into custody.
-Assists with the preparation and transfer of all required documents pertaining to court proceedings.
-Ensures all necessary supplies, equipment and materials are available for courtroom proceedings including audio video equipment, flip charts, refreshments, seating arraignments, etc.
-Reserves parking spaces for judges and law enforcement personnel when necessary.
-Assist with the sequestration, feeding and lodging of jurists when necessary.
-Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

Necessary Requirements of Work
Graduation from an accredited high school; considerable experience working in correctional facilities, law enforcement and/or security; ability to interact effectively and maintain control of defendants, family members, and the public; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job and control defiant individuals; strong interpersonal, decision making and organizational skills; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
-Thorough knowledge of security procedures utilized in courtroom proceedings including emergency situations and lock downs.
-Thorough knowledge of the legal issues involved with providing courtroom security.
-Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to the intake and custody of criminal offenders.
-Considerable knowledge of Circuit, General Sessions, Chancery and Juvenile court proceedings and protocols.
-Considerable knowledge of standard legal documents utilized in courtroom proceedings including the proper dissemination and confidentiality of protected information.
-Considerable knowledge of all established crisis plans for the Courthouse.
-Knowledge of radio communication procedures and practices.
-Ability to respond to emergency and/or lock down situations in a timely and appropriate manner in accordance with established crisis plans.
-Ability to operate commonly used office equipment including FAX machines, telephones, copiers, etc.
-Ability to remain attentive and aware of potentially dangerous situations during court proceedings.
-Ability to communicate and interact effectively with correctional officers, family members and the public.
-Ability to maintain, transport and ensure the confidentiality of legally protected information.
-Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the position and control defendants and/or family members when necessary.
-Skill in the use of office equipment including telephone and radio systems, copiers, FAX machines, etc.

Necessary Special Requirements
-Must be at least 21 years of age.
-Must be a United States citizen.
-Can not have been convicted or plead guilty, or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances.
-Can not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
-Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver's License and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
-Must attend courtroom security seminars and briefings.

Physical Requirements
-This is light to medium work requiring moderate static, explosive, dynamic and trunk strength and requiring the exertion of up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects
-Work requires considerable flexibility, mobility and speed of limb movement
-Work requires moderate effort and stamina
-Work requires both gross body equilibrium and coordination for balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling and walking
-Work requires arm/ hand steadiness and manual and finger dexterity
-Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
-Hearing is required to perceive information in both quiet and noisy environments and determine the direction of sounds
-Visual acuity is required for the inspection of small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of office equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, color differentiation, and observing general surroundings and activities
-The worker must be able to respond in a timely and appropriate manner to potentially dangerous or disruptive situations
-The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions
