Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to lead and coordinate activities of crews involved in performing construction, maintenance, inspection, and repair of City facilities, grounds or property.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Enforces safe work procedures; ensures the establishment of safe work zones; and reports safety hazards to Supervisor.
  • Performs daily safety check of equipment; ensures vehicle and equipment maintenance and cleaning; and reports mechanical or other defects to Supervisor.
  • Participates in the work of crews engaged in the construction and maintenance of public works.
  • Operates vehicles, trucks, excavator, front end loader, backhoe, bulldozer, weed cutters, chain saws and other equipment to accomplish construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Transports tools and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains tool and supply inventory.
  • Responds to after-hours and weather-related emergencies.
  • Assists with special City events.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Four (4) years of public works experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Physical Demands:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, dancing, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

  • Traffic; Moving machinery.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
