Job Title: R&D Chemist Department: R& D Lab

Reports to: Manager of Technical Services FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

As the R&D Chemist, you will support the Lebermuth mission to provide quality, safe essential oil products that meet customer and product requirements by employing analytical, laboratory, and research skills with industry expertise.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Sample Analysis

* Conducts chemical and physical analyses for essential oil and product samples to determine their composition for product creation, market analysis and questions from Sales and Purchasing.
* Analyze and provide the disposition for alternate vendor samples for raw materials to support strategic purchasing.

Product Creation

* Create formulas for and work with Production scheduler to maintain inventory of specific qualities of select essential oils utilizing chemical and physical analyses by blending farmer drums to obtain the required product specifications.
* Provide information to and work with the Creative Lab as needed to generate prototypes of new products to grow Lebermuth's essential oil business.

Specifications

* Create specifications for raw materials based on analyses to support quality control and strategic purchases.
* Monitor compositional trends in essential oil raw materials and adjust specifications as needed to maintain high levels of quality.
* Analyze customer-provided materials and identify the closest internal quality match to grow business.

Expertise

* Coordinates with other departments (QC, purchasing, production, QA, sales, perfumery, etc.) to support the business with expertise on essential oils.

Troubleshooting

* Investigates unusual/unacceptable results, recommending corrective actions as needed to drive the quality and safety of products.
* Creates blending plans for raw materials to meet specifications to reduce waste.

Analytical

* Operate and perform maintenance on the gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer and associated systems to ensure continued performance.
* Utilize knowledge of GC and GCMS, retention times, retention indices, and gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy to analyze materials.

Documentation

* Maintain documentation such as laboratory notebooks, instrumental electronic data collection/storage software, instrument logbooks, regulatory and training records to ensure compliance with requirements.
* Assists in developing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures to support internal systems.
* Researches, develops, and implements innovative ways to improve laboratory procedures to optimize efficiencies and drive profitability.

Other

* Visits farms as needed and facilitates presentations at industry events to ensure complete understanding of Lebermuth and our new and existing product offerings.
* Promotes a safe food culture by maintaining a clean and organized workspace and adhering to all quality and safety standards within the department to ensure the safe production and shipment of quality food products.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a closely related field.

Experience: 3-5 years of on-the-job experience in an analytical or R&D lab with hands-on experience analyzing mixtures of materials. Experience in the essential oil, or flavor and fragrance industry is preferred. Familiarity with distillation or formulation is a plus.

Functional Skills: Good math and complex problem-solving skills used in an analytical and production environment. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Independent and responsible. Integrates complex or diverse information; uses intuition and experience to complement data. Attentive to detail; accurate, and thorough. Able to receive constructive feedback. Knowledge of chemical/physical principles, theories, and methodologies.

Technology Aptitude/Skills: Ability to operate and perform general maintenance on GC-FID and GCMS systems is necessary. Ability to interpret GC and GCMS data is essential. Strong skills in Microsoft Office, especially in Excel, is preferred. Ability to learn and use computer programs.
