Said Scholar Program Leader Position Description
General Description:
The Said Scholars Program Leader is a junior or senior (for AY 2024-25) undergraduate student who also works part-time as a staff member of the Said Scholars Program. The primary function of the Program Leader is to help build community among the Said Scholars and help students integrate learning experiences gained from both inside and outside of the program courses.
The Program Leader reports to the two Faculty Directors of the Said Scholar Program and works closely with the Faculty Directors to develop and implement extracurricular programming to enrich and extend learning from classes.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate for this position is a rising junior or senior SIS major (for AY 2024-25) with Peace, Global Security, and Conflict Resolution as their primary or secondary thematic area and an interest in Intercultural Communication. In particular, the ideal candidate would be interested in conflict resolution, interfaith dialogue, and strategies for peacebuilding.
Time Commitment:
This position is for both the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters and requires approximately 5-7 hours/week during both semesters (130 hrs total for the full academic year).
Compensation:
The position pays $17.50 per hour
Responsibilities:
Administration / Programming
Attend planning meetings with Faculty Directors. Plan, implement, and attend a minimum of six co-curricular learning opportunities across the academic year for Said scholars in collaboration with the Faculty Directors. Report concerns and violations of published University policies, regulations, and procedures in an accurate and timely manner to Faculty Directors or Associate Dean Shinko. Abide by FERPA and American University professional and ethical standards of conduct, maintain confidentiality, and not release private information regarding staff and/or students.
Community Facilitation:
Engage in and facilitate discussions among students at program events as appropriate. Encourage students to identify linkages between course material and co-curricular experiences. Conduct a check-in with each student in the program within the first six weeks of the fall semester. Have a working knowledge of the University's facilities, services, academic and campus resources, and campus involvement and local opportunities and share this information with students as appropriate. Work to promote a sense of tolerance and consideration in the attitudes and behaviors of students in the program.
Role Modeling:
Understand that all actions of a PL (including those engaged in outside of the classroom) are observed by students, faculty, and staff. PLs must hold themselves accountable to University policies, regulations and procedures. Be mindful of appropriate boundaries of the PL-student relationship. PLs are explicitly prohibited from pursuing any romantic and/or unprofessional relations with students enrolled in the Said Scholars program.
Team Member:
Maintain positive relationships with Faculty Directors, Undergraduate Program staff and campus partners. Maintain ongoing communication with Said Scholars, Faculty Directors and Undergraduate Program Staff by checking their AU e-mail on a daily basis and responding to program-related emails in a timely manner.
