Description
Summary
The Patient Service Specialist ("PSS") is responsible for sustaining an effective support structure by managing the administrative and clerical tasks in an inpatient clinical setting of Boone Memorial Hospital, Inc. ("BMH"). The Patient Service Specialist will coordinate and organize appointments and documentation to facilitate the smooth running of the healthcare environment and support delivery of quality patient care.
Essential Functions

The Patient Service Specialist is expected to perform the following essential functions:
- Professionally assist providers, staff, visitors, and patients.
- Greet and attend to patients in person and over the phone.
- Register patients according to established protocols.
- Assist patients to complete all necessary forms and documentation including medical insurance.
- Ensure patient information is accurate including billing information.
- Inform patients of medical office procedures and policy.
- Maintain and manage patient records.
- Move patients through appointments as scheduled.
- Answer incoming calls and transfer calls as required in a professional and courteous manner.
- Schedule appointments between doctors and patients to optimize patient satisfaction, provider time and most effective use of examining and treatment rooms. Prepare a daily schedule of examinations for each provider.
- Obtain external medical reports as required by medical professionals.
- Collect co-pays and payments.
- Report statistics as required.
- Respond and comply to requests for information.
- Maintain and distribute incoming and outgoing post as necessary.
- Maintain business inventory such as checking supplies, scheduling equipment, and maintenance repairs.
- Ensure reception area is well maintained, neat and clean.
- Complete other clerical duties as assigned.
- Perform all duties within HIPAA regulations.

- Excellent time management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- None
Physical demands
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
Travel required
- None expected.
Required education and experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred education and experience
- One (1) or more year(s) of customer service or registration experience in a healthcare setting, preferred.
