Position Summary
This position will participate in impactful, biomedical research activities. The Research Specialist will assist with collaborative, laboratory activities in the area of sickle cell disease-related kidney damage using techniques of cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, preclinical mouse modeling as well as actively participate in maintaining the day-to-day needs of the lab. The successful candidate will be well-organized, passionate about research, positively embrace teamwork while eagerly working toward independent proficiency to perform new skills and responsibilities as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities
Supports collaborative research projects under limited supervision by conducting routine techniques of molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry with increasing independence (i.e. DNA, RNA, and protein extraction, PCR, Western blotting, ELISA, cell culture, and microscopy) • Assists with preclinical mouse modeling including mouse husbandry as well as handling and processing of biospecimens • Maintains clear, accurate, complete, and timely reports of experiments and generated data • Maintains day-to-day lab materials and supplies including assistance with lab organization, maintaining stock and inventory, ordering supplies, and looks after general maintenance of the lab in accordance with safe laboratory standards • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned_Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in science or related field required. Masters degree in science preferred
A minimum of 3 years of related research experience
Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods.
Proficient in specific lab research techniques.

Preferred Qualifications
Proficient experience with mouse work (i.e. husbandry and preclinical modeling), tail-vein injection for interventions/therapies, and biosample collection (e.g. retro-orbital, tail-vein, jugular vein for blood and metabolic cages for urine). At least three prior years of experience preferred in pre-clinical mouse models.
Proficient experience in specific lab research techniques of cell biology, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry is preferred: i.e. DNA, RNA, and protein extraction, Western blotting, PCR, DNA transformation, and mammalian cell culture.
Willingness to develop new skills and increasingly work independently, once proficient
Well-organized with attention for detail
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work as part of a collaborative team
Proficiency with Office suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Possesses and applies basic knowledge of biologic sciences, biomedical research principles, concepts, practices and methods which have been developed through related research experience.
