Position Summary

The Department Coordinator in the College of Education will provide coordination and administrative support for an academic department consisting of five graduate programs: Community Based Block; Marriage and Family Therapy; School Counseling; School Psychology; Education with a concentration in Counseling, and an undergraduate minor program in Counseling and Social Change. These programs function semi-autonomously, and the Department Coordinator will work with the Chair and the various graduate advisors to complete the necessary work related to each program. The position serves as a point of contact for all guests visiting the Department including prospective students, current students, staff, and faculty. Work is performed independently, and the Department Coordinator must be able to effectively handle highly sensitive situations and interpersonal interactions at all levels.

The position will perform all department clerical and administrative tasks including purchasing, travel paperwork, expense reimbursements, helping visitors and callers, calendaring, event/meeting engagements, facilities requests, correspondence and mailings, entering data into databases, maintaining files, supervising student assistants, and managing the various budgets. They will also develop class schedule drafts, maintain the master class schedule, and ensure that the department is meeting all program and fiscal obligations. The Department Coordinator will also have the responsibility to process faculty appointment paperwork ensuring that all contractual obligations have been met.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Department of Counseling and School Psychology (CSP) prepares culturally competent and compassionate professionals at the graduate level to provide leadership in school counseling, school psychology, marriage and family therapy, and community counseling. In addition, the Department engages undergraduates in the social sciences in theoretical and professional knowledge and skills in counseling, social change and social justice with the option of an undergraduate minor. CSP is an interdisciplinary department committed to working towards equity, economic, and social justice within the College and University, our professions, and throughout the broader society. The Department currently has 15 tenure/tenure-track faculty and approximately 8 lecturers, teaching associates and graduate assistants.

The College of Education prepares skilled personnel for positions in teaching, administration, counseling, and other roles in Pre-K-12 schools, community colleges/ postsecondary education, public agencies, and the entrepreneurial sector. We serve urban, suburban, and rural communities richly diverse in culture, language, and ability/disability through partnerships designed to improve life outcomes of children, youth, adults, and their families.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.

These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

Key Qualifications

  • Experience working with a highly diverse student population in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Experience working in a counseling or student affairs environment is preferred.

  • Ability to compose correspondence and standard reports.
  • Expertise in using office software packages, technology, and systems
  • Ability to perform business math, analyze budgetary data, and make accurate projections requiring some inference.
  • Ability to effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels and handle highly sensitive interpersonal situations.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,043 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,865 - $6,336 per month.
