Position Summary

CARE focuses on community engaged approaches to address health inequities, particularly pertaining to chronic disease prevention. CARE has organized with dozens of residents and community groups to build community gardens and implement nutrition interventions like Supporting Wellness at Pantries, advocated for safer streets for walking and biking, provided vaccine education to thousands of residents, built coalitions to address specific health issues, and trained dozens of community members as community health advocates.

The Director of CARE provides leadership for the management, operations, and administration of the Community Alliance for Research and Engagement. Provides high-level project management, staff supervision, human resources support, and leads report writing, grant writing, and development activities. Seeks partnerships, contracts, and sources of external funding necessary to deliver community engaged research and programs that improve the health of residents in New Haven. Responsible for strategic planning, budget management, fundraising, grant writing, recruiting, training, supervision and evaluation of students and other CARE staff.

Employees may be eligible for a partial remote work schedule upon management approval, depending on department needs, and after an initial working period is complete, however the position will require a robust on-campus and New Haven community presence.

Position Responsibilities

Provide high-level administrative coordination for the CARE organization in the College of Health and Human Services. Supports infrastructure, organizational capacity, and sustainability of CARE.

Operates administrative systems of CARE in alignment with the policies and procedures of SCSU and in coordination with YSPH.

Collaborates with the Senior Director of Community Initiatives to lead strategic planning and implementation of strategic activities for CARE. Contributes to advancing CARE's strategic priorities.

Plans, designs, executes, and manages grant-funded community health projects, including the CDC-funded REACH program, a community-level chronic disease prevention project.

Manages project staff to plan, implement, and evaluate project activities. Supports and oversees a team of staff members who are engaged in extensive community engagement and community health project implementation.

Coordinates with Human Resources to recruit, hire, supervise, develop, and evaluate staff and students.

Manages and monitors complex budgets from multiple funding sources, ensuring adherence with expenditure policies and procedures. Reviews financial reports and projections for continuous fiscal management. Works closely with the Office of Sponsored Projects and Research.

Oversees, reviews, approves, and tracks preparation and submission of data reports, in compliance with funder requirements and deadlines. Creates systems for gathering and synthesizing information for internal and external reports. Works with staff and subcontractors to monitor compliance.

Leads the development of all key elements of grant and contract proposals, including developing budgets and submission process. Manage community partnerships and negotiate and secure agreements.

Provides opportunities for SCSU employees and students to contribute to CARE's community engaged activities and programs.

Lead and serve on internal and external committees, task forces, and special projects to consistent with CARE's mission.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those described above which do not alter the basic responsibility of the position.

Required Qualifications

* Master's degree. Preferred: Master's in Public Health, Social Work, Public Administration, or related discipline.
* 5 years of work experience in program administration and project management with a minimum of 5 years leading and implementing community programs.
* Expertise with community-level interventions and research.
* Experience with management, operations, and administration of a community organization or equivalent. Preferred: experience leading a community organization or equivalent.
* Strong, demonstrated commitment to health equity and racial equity.
* Successful track record of convening and working with community-based organizations and other community stakeholders.
* Demonstrated track record of writing and securing large funding sources.
* Experience with supervision of staff and interns.
* Experience with diverse populations.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Well organized and able to exercise independent judgment and initiative. Experience working in a research setting. Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment. High attention to detail.
