Job Overview:As a Shipyard Shipfitter, you will be responsible for assembling, aligning, and welding structural steel components used in the construction and repair of ships. You will work in a shipyard environment, often outdoors, and may be required to work at heights or in confined spaces. Your primary goal will be to ensure that all steel structures on board ships are built to the highest standards of quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics to determine the layout, assembly, and installation of structural steel components.
  • Fabricate, fit, and weld structural steel components, including frames, bulkheads, decks, and other components used in ship construction and repair.
  • Use hand and power tools, including saws, grinders, and drills, to prepare steel components for welding and assembly.
  • Operate welding equipment, including stick, MIG, and TIG welders, to join steel components together.
  • Use precision measuring instruments, such as levels and plumb bobs, to ensure that steel components are aligned and assembled correctly.
  • Conduct regular quality control inspections to ensure that all steel structures are built to the highest standards of quality and safety.
  • Follow all safety procedures and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical school training in welding or a related field is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a shipfitter in a shipyard or marine environment.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel components used in ship construction and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Proficient in the use of hand and power tools, including saws, grinders, and drills.
  • Experience operating welding equipment, including stick, MIG, and TIG welders.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with precision.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
