Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Shipfitter to join our team at a local shipyard. As a Shipfitter, you will be responsible for assembling, aligning, and welding structural steel components used in the construction and repair of ships. You will work in a shipyard environment, often outdoors, and may be required to work at heights or in confined spaces.
Key Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics to determine the layout, assembly, and installation of structural steel components.
- Fabricate, fit, and weld structural steel components, including frames, bulkheads, decks, and other components used in ship construction and repair.
- Use hand and power tools, including saws, grinders, and drills, to prepare steel components for welding and assembly.
- Operate welding equipment, including stick, MIG, and TIG welders, to join steel components together.
- Use precision measuring instruments, such as levels and plumb bobs, to ensure that steel components are aligned and assembled correctly.
- Conduct regular quality control inspections to ensure that all steel structures are built to the highest standards of quality and safety.
- Follow all safety procedures and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical school training in welding or a related field is preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience as a shipfitter in a shipyard or marine environment.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel components used in ship construction and repair.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Proficient in the use of hand and power tools, including saws, grinders, and drills.
- Experience operating welding equipment, including stick, MIG, and TIG welders.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with precision.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
