QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Degree/Education: Bachelor’s degree. Graduate from an accredited college or university certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). 
  • Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants (NCCPA). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are required. 
  • Experience: Shall have 24 months of experience within the last 36 months in an outpatient clinical setting. Experience will be in the same clinical specialty. 
  • Board Certification: None 
  • Licensure/Registration: Current, full, active and unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant as required in the TO. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties include but are not limited to the following: 
  • The workload includes the evaluation and treatment of emergent, urgent, and non-emergent patients ranging in age as young as newborns to over 65 years. The Physician Assistant’s actual clinical activity will be a function of the Commander/Commanding Officer’s clinical privileges and the overall demand for primary care. The workload is a result of scheduled appointments, walk-ins to the clinic from the Emergency Department, walk-ins for specific diagnoses and telephone calls, and consults (such as pre-op). The Physician Assistant will be required to consult with specialty physicians for consultative opinions and continuation of care. The Physician Assistant will practice within the guidelines set by the credentialing office of the MTF and the Medical Director. Productivity is expected to be comparable to that of the other civilian and military Physician Assistants assigned to the same facility/similar facilities and authorized the same scope of practice. The Physician Assistant will be assigned an empanelment of approximately 1,250 patients. The Physician Assistant shall meet the Air Force Medical Operations Agency (AFMOA) standard of 100 appointments per week: 80 face to face and 20 virtual. 
  • Provide a full range of Physician Assistant services in primary and specialty medical care within the limits of their training and privileges granted by the MTF (e.g., supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated). 
  • Technically direct and provide care for a variety of diseases and types of injuries (i.e., acute, chronic and minor trauma), and the skills to recognize emergency conditions to diagnose, prescribe for and treat diseases, disorders and injuries, and refer the more complex cases and serious conditions to qualified medical personnel and perform designated treatment. 
  • Technically direct and teach other staff, provide evidenced-based educational lectures and participate in in-service training to staff members. 
  • Promote preventive care and health maintenance including annual physicals, positive health behaviors and self-care through both formal and individual education and counseling. 
  • Prescribe in accordance with approved treatment protocols and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee approved medications and immunizations.
  • Identify a medical problem and determine appropriate action to meet the problem, including referral to a physician. 
  • Perform specific diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures in accordance with scope of practice. 
  • Establish collaborative rapport with physicians, nursing and others to promote and facilitate primary care services.
  • Teach patients and family members’ healthy regimen and responsibility for achieving wellness. 
  • Attend staff meetings to provide case discussion, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Perform peer review of a minimum of 10 routine cases per month 
  • Perform an average of 15 Performance Health Assessments (PHA) per month 
  • Perform an average of 5 Medical Evaluation Boards (MEB) per month
  • Perform an average of 10 deployment clearances per month
  • Documentation. Contractor employees will prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established MTF standards, to include, but not limited to: timeliness, accuracy, content, and signature. Contractor employees will only use MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations for documentation in the patient health records and follow the MTF’s Do Not Use Abbreviation List. (AFI 44-172 / AFI 48-123, Medical Examinations and Standards, 5 November 2013) 
  • Medical Records Documentation. Health care providers will complete medical records documentation within 72 business hours of the encounter with the patient. 
  • Coding. Contractor employees shall use the proper coding of procedures and treatment and shall maintain coding accuracy (CPT/E&M/procedure) at the same standard, 90% or higher, as military and civil service health care providers engaged in comparable work.
