Letterform Archive is seeking an experienced and exceptional leader with a strong education and administration background to support our ongoing growth in the newly expanded role of Education Director, as the part-time incumbent becomes Dean of Type West, and we add leadership of programming to the role. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Education Director is a member of the leadership team, leading our education efforts in certificate programs, local and online public programs, and the development of a new asynchronous learning curriculum. They are responsible for ensuring program relevance, educational excellence, and ongoing successful operations.

Responsibilities

Administration:

  • Develop annual education budget, drive revenue to meet or exceed goals, and control expenses. Review results relative to budget and other key education metrics regularly with the Executive Director.
  • Organizational leadership for faculty, students, and team; faculty recruitment and development.
  • Collaborate with development team to pursue corporate sponsorships, grants, and other funding to support Education and Programs, including funded programs and scholarships for underserved communities.
  • Enhance and implement education and programming policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to org-wide strategic planning and quarterly reporting with the leadership team and board.

Certificate Programs:

  • Collaborate with the Dean of Type West to maintain and develop our local and online/worldwide year-long postgraduate certificate programs in type design.

Public Programs:

  • Reorganize all our existing local and online public programs and events onto a unified calendar. Work with your team to enhance the revenue and impact of this programming, as well as the hospitality and production standard of its execution.

Tours & Docents:

  • Hire for the new role of Tours and Docent Manager, working with the incumbent to train the new hire (as they transition out of the role).
  • Maintain our grant funded docent training program and expand our capacity for both local and virtual tours.

Asynchronous Learning:

  • Develop and implement a robust and inclusive asynchronous learning curriculum to serve those who want to enhance their skills and portfolios as an alternative to unaffordable accredited alternatives.
  • Create a variety of offerings from single courses to asynchronous certificate programs to meet student needs and career goals. Ensure that students come away with meaningful additions to their portfolio from every course. Maintain a high production standard, and use the unique resources, atmosphere, and ethos of the archive as differentiators throughout.

Position Type, Schedule, Location, Pay & Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position working 40 hours per week during the Archive's normal office hours in addition to nights and weekends as required. It is onsite at Letterform Archive’s offices in San Francisco 3-4 days per week; work-from-home days are as agreed with your supervisor.

The pay rate for this role is between $90,000 and $120,000 per year depending on candidate experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience as a designer.
  • 5+ years of growing responsibilities in education administration.
  • Demonstrated history of professional practice and/or scholarship and teaching.
  • Experience developing innovative and inclusive curriculum with strong pedagogical vision.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; flexibility and comfort in a rapidly changing environment, and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines; high degree of integrity and dependability.
  • Experience working with diverse groups in a culturally-competent manner with a global perspective.

Ideal Qualifications

In addition to the minimum qualifications above, an ideal candidate would have some, but not necessarily all, of the following qualifications as well:

  • An advanced degree in graphic design or a related field.
  • An expansive view of contemporary practice in graphic design, including transforming practices, design research and strategy, interdisciplinary collaboration, critical pedagogies, and engagement with emerging technologies.
  • Experience with online programming and/or developing asynchronous educational programs.
  • Excellent supervision and people-management skills and a proven ability to mentor, motivate, and support through inclusive leadership practices and collaborative problem solving.

Physical Demands

The Education Director will regularly be required to perform desk-based computer tasks, including using a computer screen for long periods of time, typing, and making phone calls. They may also occasionally be required to move items weighing up to 10 pounds or push and maneuver a fully-loaded book truck weighing up to 60 pounds. If needed, the Archive will provide reasonable accommodations to an employee with a disability to enable them to perform the essential functions of their job.
