Director, Scientific Education

SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:
The Director, Scientific Education and Training is responsible for the leadership of the Scientific Education branch of the training team. The Director plays an integral role in supporting Medical Affairs, particularly the global MSL team, and other cross-functional partners. The Director of Scientific education contributes to the strategy and leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of strategic and comprehensive training for the team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Proactively anticipate and address evolving educational needs and develop scientific curriculum based on life-cycle management and disease area requirements; collaborates with MSLs, Medical Affairs leaders, and other cross-functional stakeholders to identify continuing education/training needs.
- Responsible for the strategic planning and project management of tumor &/or molecule training material.
- Lead, collaborate and deliver best-in-class onboarding and ongoing product and disease state education to Medical Affairs and cross-functional partners via live or virtual training.
- Participate in tumor-specific Medical Affairs strategy team discussions to inform future training needs.
- Assist in the design and implementation of policies and procedures to drive appropriate conduct as well as meet Medical Affairs objectives.
- In collaboration with the Global MA meeting planner, assist with the coordination of Medical Affairs meeting planning and logistics.
- Oversee vendors involved in projects as applicable.
- Represent Exelixis at medical conferences and provide educational summaries.
- Work effectively with MSLs and management at all levels throughout the Exelixis organization; interact with high-level clients as well as managed care organizations.
- Provide direction to other individuals and oversee projects involving other team members.
- Serve as a mentor to other training team members.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages multiple direct reports.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Education/Experience:
- Accredited doctorate degree in a basic science or life-science discipline (Pharm.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., D.N.P., or M.D./D.O.) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or,
- Master's level oncology PA or NP with active progress towards completion of a doctorate degree may be considered and a minimum of 11 years of relevant experience; or,
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Content/curricula or training certifications in adult learning training content preferred.
Experience/The Ideal for Successful Entry into Job:
- Accredited doctorate degree preferred.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years as an MSL or in a Medical Affairs role in oncology preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years of oncology training experience preferred.
- Postdoctoral work &/or fellowship experience can be applied toward years of experience.
Knowledge/Skills:
- Maintains a high level of scientific knowledge in the relevant disease-specific area.
- Possess exceptional communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong teaching skills; established track record of effective oral presentations.
- Strong analytical capabilities and expertise in critically evaluating the appropriate scientific literature.
- Prior content development and training experience required.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
- General knowledge of FDA compliance and regulatory requirements; global compliance and regulatory requirements a plus.
- Skilled in Excel and PowerPoint; working knowledge with Articulate 360 &/or Biorender a plus; ability to grasp new applications with minimal direction.
JOB COMPLEXITY:
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Environment: primarily working indoors, performing clerical work or meeting with clients.
- Travel required - 50% of travel either domestically or internationally required, including overnights and weekends for major medical/scientific and company meetings.
