Position Summary: The Chief Program Officer at Row New York has the opportunity to support and oversee all of the organization’s rowing and academic programs and carry out the strategic vision for the organization. The CPO will be an integral part of Row New York’s senior leadership team and ensure high quality, effective, and safe programs for middle school and high school students, people with disabilities, and veterans by providing management and programmatic skills, and oversight to the organization. The CPO should be a highly motivated, seasoned manager of people, teams and projects, and a strong communicator with a passion for youth’s success regardless of their background or ability. Candidates should be experienced in and committed to fostering the development of staff and students, provide vision and expertise to the program team, and multi-task exceptionally well. The CPO will work out of Row New York’s office in Midtown Manhattan and will travel to program sites in upper Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn regularly.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In coordination with the Deputy Executive Director and other members of the leadership team, play a key role in the overall development, strategic planning, program delivery, and management of the organization across multiple sites and departments.
  • Oversee the management of all youth rowing and academic programs, adaptive, and veterans’ rowing to ensure programs are run safely, inclusively, and professionally, meet strategic and budgetary goals, and align with Row New York’s mission.
  • Oversee the coordination, integration, and delivery of all programs, promoting collaborative relationships between programs and ensuring that the expectations of funders, partners, participants, and other stakeholders are consistently met.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and oversight to all programming staff; directly manage three program directors; provide assistance and guidance to directors on managing their programs and staff, including implementing opportunities for growth and development.
  • Deploy resources efficiently and effectively, working with staff to balance workload and effort, and provide regular feedback to managers enabling them to lead effective teams.
  • Determine staffing plans and participate in hiring decisions for program staff; assist in onboarding new staff within programs and across the organization.
  • Support a culture that promotes professionalism, hard work, responsiveness, warmth, high challenge, high support, and respect.
  • Work with the Metrics and Evaluation Manager to ensure programmatic metrics are being tracked, submitted, and analyzed to ensure program accountability and progress of participants; engage in both the creation and evaluation of measurable outcomes and timelines to meet those goals.
  • Work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and the Operations Team to budget for and monitor programmatic operations to ensure sound fiscal and facilities management to support programs and services.
  • Provide program information and outcomes to the Development and Communications team on a regular basis and promote a culture of philanthropy across the program team.
  • Work closely with the Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Development Officer, and their teams to effectively market programs and recruit participants, and to provide data and insights to secure funding from foundations, individuals, and government entities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s in nonprofit management, education or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ related professional experience, with significant experience in a youth-serving organization in New York City strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ successful management experience, including hiring, onboarding, supervising and developing staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management.
  • Experience developing and managing a program budget.
  • Professional and warm demeanor with an aptitude for developing relationships with diverse personalities and stakeholders.
  • A strong communicator both verbally and in writing; ability and willingness to communicate with candor and diplomacy.
  • Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative and ability to work individually and on a team; proven track record of getting things done.
  • Superior organizational skills, with experience prioritizing multiple projects and meeting deadlines; willing to be flexible with a lean staff.
  • Passion for and commitment to serving low income communities.
  • Prior knowledge or experience rowing is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to travel to multiple program sites.
  • Availability for late afternoon and evening programming as well as some weekends.
