The San Francisco office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Landscape Architect to join our team.


Working with us, you will:

  1. Work in a collaborative, integrated environment, teaming with other design professionals to compile data and prepare design solutions.
  2. Supervise the preparation of landscape architectural drawing for all phases on projects of various sizes, specifically in the technical aspects of landscape architecture.
  3. Direct team members and others in the application of landscape architectural standards and guidelines.
  4. Mentor junior staff and participate in performance coaching.
  5. Consult with product manufacturers, evaluate and select construction materials, and finalize construction document details.
  6. Use in depth knowledge of trees, shrubs, ground covers, perennials, and annuals in preparing planting plans and technical details / specifications.
  7. Lead in editing technical specifications and reviewing shop drawings.
  8. Lead and mentor construction administration and observation.
  9. Establish and manage project budgets and schedules.
  10. Manage contractor and client relations during construction for larger and more complex projects.
  11. Participate in design meetings, conduct design work sessions and visioning, outreach and public forums.
  12. Participate in marketing efforts including proposal development, interview participation and presentations (this includes proposal writing and scope and fee negotiation).
  13. Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.
  14. Travel as needed for project work.

An ideal candidate has:

  1. A minimum of a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or equivalent.
  2. 10 or more years of professional experience.
  3. Landscape Architectural registration required.
  4. LEED AP and / or SITES AP preferred.
  5. Proficiency in current design software including Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

SmithGroup's competitive compensation and benefit package is designed to meet the needs of a diverse staff. The anticipated salary range for this position is $103,000 to $129,000 annually, at the time of posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the anticipated salary range for this position. Additionally, an employee in this position is eligible for a performance-based bonus on an annual basis. Our comprehensive benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, flexible spending account options and voluntary insurances. We provide an opportunity to invest in your future through our 401(k) program with employer matching and a continuing education reimbursement. We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, 8 paid federal holidays, and parental leave benefits. SmithGroup also promotes a healthy work/life balance for our staff which includes an alternative work schedule that provides employees with an additional 15 days off per year (usually Fridays), as well as hybrid work options that give our team the flexibility to work within our vibrant office culture or remotely, as needed.
