The Summer 2024 Internship Program is an initiative through the Office of the City Administrator, whose 25+ divisions and departments operate core internal and public-facing services in San Francisco. The internship program is open to current college juniors, seniors, graduate students, recent grads and other applicants who have an interest in working for local government. This internship program is a great opportunity to work alongside and shadow professionals in desired fields of interest and truly see the impact being made in public sector divisions through a hands-on learning experience

The duration of this internship is 12 weeks, with an opportunity to extend based on departmental need.

Individuals hired will be appointed to a class 9922 Public Service Aide to Professional positions and compensated $27.46 per hour.

About the Public Affairs and Employee Engagement Team

The City Administrator’s Central Office seeks a Public Affairs and Engagement Intern to support the development and facilitation of communications and policy for the Office of the City Administrator. The City Administrator’s Public Affairs Team plans, implements, and executes a comprehensive communications and legislative strategy on behalf of the City Administrator’s Office to promote the programs and initiatives of the 25 agencies under its umbrella. Under direct supervision, the Public Affairs and Engagement Intern will receive training from both the City Administrator’s Public Affairs and Employee Engagement teams to complete a variety of complex projects related to communications, policy, outreach, event planning, data analysis and report preparation. The Intern will receive an introduction to department functions, conduct research, prepare draft documents, and coordinate with department personnel to improve communications, policy, and outreach of the City Administrator’s Office. The trainee will also perform additional related duties under the supervision of various team members with special projects.

Interns will gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced professionals while participating in various activities in the assigned City department.

Essential Duties - The Public Affairs and Engagement Intern will work in a dynamic environment to support complex projects that improve outreach, operations, and policies. Supervision and training will be provided by the City Administrator’s Public Affairs and Employee Engagement teams, and projects will be subject to the intern’s skills and interests.

Projects may include:

  • Drafting policies, communications, and reports for the City Administrator’s Office, including but not limited to social media posts, email communications, and internal staff policies;
  • Meeting with City Administrator’s Office divisions to conduct needs assessment and research;
  • Developing policies, best practices, and resources for improving language access;
  • Supporting staff events and efforts to achieve zero waste in the workplace;
  • Other duties as assigned.
How to qualify

Desirable Qualifications – Ideal candidates will possess:

  • Keen interest in a career in policy, government, communications, public affairs, and public service;
  • Strong work ethic and effective written communication and organizational skills;
  • A can-do attitude and ability to pivot quickly according to the needs of the Office;
  • Good time management skills including the ability to prioritize and track multiple projects, excellent attention to detail, and willingness to learn new skills.

Education – Candidates recently graduated from an accredited college or university or pursuing or recently graduated from a graduate degree program (Master’s degree or higher) will be considered. Exceptional candidates currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university may also be considered.

Experience – No previous experience is required.

Additional Requirements:

Candidates must be prepared to receive on-the-job training to acquire the ability to apply professional standards and skills as they relate to internal and external communications and development of policies within the Public Affairs and Employee Engagement teams.
