Washington, United States NDWA Labs Full time

Job Title: Director of Government Relations

Employee Type: Permanent Full-Time

Reports To: Deputy Director Policy and Advocacy

Department: Policy and Advocacy

Entity: NDWA

Work Location: Washington, DC. You will primarily be working remotely, with in-person attendance as required.

Job Posting until: Oct 28, 2024

BACKGROUND:

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity, respect, and recognition for domestic workers in the United States. NDWA was founded in 2007 by organizers and worker leaders in six cities representing nannies, house cleaners, and care workers, and now represents an alliance of more than 76 organizations across 22 states and 395,000 domestic workers nationally.

We envision a society where domestic work is valued as essential to our collective well-being, domestic workers are leaders in shaping the care sector, and domestic work jobs are good, economically secure jobs.

For over 15 years, we’ve worked to advance our mission by making domestic work visible. We’ve worked to pass policies that enable rights and higher wages for domestic workers across the country, changed public awareness and opinion about the dignity and value of care work, and built the capacity and leadership of domestic workers to organize and advocate for their rights.

We see the next era of our organization as an opportunity to move domestic work from newfound visibility towards transformation, and we’re ready to elevate care workers to the essential workers of the 21st-century economy.

We’re a multi-racial, multi-lingual organization building a powerful movement rooted in the human rights, dignity, and equality of domestic workers, care workers, immigrant women, and women of color.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Government Relations will be responsible for developing and leading NDWA relationships with government representatives and agencies to advance the organization’s federal agenda.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Support the development of and implement NDWA’s government relations strategy to advance the organization’s federal agenda related to workers rights, future of work, benefits, and immigration.
  2. Organize legislative and administrative efforts at the federal level, especially with congressional offices, including cultivating relationships with key offices in Congress, preparing educational outreach materials, and planning and executing events to advance NDWA priorities.
  3. Develop and lead virtual and in-person mobilizations of NDWA’s membership in Congress and plan briefings and other events on Capitol Hill.
  4. Draft and submit testimony and remarks for congressional hearings and briefings.
  5. Represent NDWA at coalition meetings, briefings and policy forums.
  6. Work collaboratively with other teams in NDWA to advance organizational agenda and strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. 4-7 years of experience in policy advocacy at the federal, state or local level, including at least 2 years in Congress.
  2. A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with coalitions, policy makers and community members.
  3. Ability to organize time, manage up, work independently, as well as follow direction, collaborate, coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  4. Experience coordinating events and outreach with numerous stakeholders and partners.
  5. Ability to organize large amounts of information to support short and long term strategic goals.
  6. Experience working with impacted community members and grassroots organizations.
  7. Excellent writing and communication skills and ability to communicate quickly and effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  8. A demonstrated commitment to racial justice, gender equity and worker rights.
How to Apply:

Please apply directly to the job posting and send resume and answer the application questions in lieu of a cover letter. Applications will only be accepted electronically, and solicitations to individual staff are unlikely to be responded to.

We value a truly diverse workforce and a culture of inclusivity and belonging. People from historically disadvantaged communities, such as Women, People of Color, People with Disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ people, are strongly urged to apply. NDWA is a union employer; this position is a bargaining unit position.
