Responsibilities

TSNE’s Fiscal Sponsorship (FS) service supports more than 50 organizations, providing operational, financial and management support including human resources and legal guidance, payroll and accounting support, and grants and finance management. The Senior Director of Fiscal Sponsorship (SDFS) will be responsible for overall program leadership, strategy implementation, partner relationships, and coordination and administration of TSNE’s fiscal sponsorship services. This role is pivotal in ensuring equitable practices, effective service delivery in alignment with program goals and partner agreements, and compliance with established processes and controls.

The SDFS will model and drive practices related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging within the Grants & Finance team and across all fiscal sponsorship operations. They will cultivate a high-performing, diverse, and collaborative team that advances TSNE’s mission, vision, and values. Additionally, the SDFS will build and manage strong relationships with stakeholders, including donors, funders, senior directors of fiscally sponsored organizations, TSNE staff, volunteers, and advisory board members.

As a key member of the organizational leadership team, the SDFS will also lead the Fiscal Sponsorship leadership group, which includes senior leaders from Accounting, HR, Legal, and other service areas. The SDFS will bring extensive nonprofit management experience, expertise in both program and business strategy, a solution-focused approach, a track record of advancing equity and social justice, and strong leadership and communication skills.

Essential Functions

Fiscal Sponsorship Program Management – 40%

  • Lead and supervise the Grants and Finance Team, ensuring effective management for fiscally sponsored organizations with individual budgets ranging from $100,000 to $11M.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight to ensure high-quality, responsive Fiscal Sponsorship services that align with TSNE’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with departmental leaders to identify and address continuous improvement opportunities, including complex, strategic issues within fiscally sponsored organizations.
  • Partner with departmental leaders to develop, review, and implement new policies and procedures for Fiscal Sponsorship services.
  • Manage the coordination and administration of Fiscal Sponsorship services, including equitable work distribution, cross-functional collaboration, and ongoing evaluation of workflows, policies, and procedures.
  • Lead strategic projects as needed, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and effective execution.
  • Manage and address a variety of Fiscal Sponsorship matters to ensure effective and responsive service delivery.
  • Oversee the professional development of Grants and Finance team members, emphasizing excellence in customer service, nonprofit operational support, and financial analysis.
  • Build relationships, learning culture, and informed engagement across all internal departments supporting the fiscal sponsorship program.
  • Refine and lead onboarding and training processes for new team members to ensure seamless integration and alignment with department goals.
  • Manage new business development opportunities by supporting with recruitment and intake process for new fiscally-sponsored organizations.
  • Provide leadership around the vision, strategy, and goals for the fiscal sponsorship program, planning and budgeting in alignment with program goals, and tracking progress towards goals.
  • Support program evaluation (in partnership with evaluation lead) and lead communications around program impact and areas for improvement.
  • Plan or support with program-wide events as needed (e.g. trainings, convenings, etc.).
  • Operationalize TSNE’s values and goals around equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging across the fiscal sponsorship program, including embedding the values in the work, staff training, implementation of DEIB initiatives, and supporting managers.
  • Onboard new FSOs as needed to ensure that relationships are clearly articulated and FSO staff have the tools and information they need to successfully navigate the FS relationship.
  • Review and approve expense and revenue contracts, including grant agreements.

Grants and Finance Operations Management – 30%

  • Work closely with the Senior Grants and Finance Managers to ensure Grants & Finance team has a healthy and strong collaborative team culture centered around TSNE’s shared values and vision.
  • Provide strategic support and guidance to FSOs and the Grants and Finance Team on organizational development, programming, and fundraising matters where necessary.
  • Oversee and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial and operational reports for Fiscal Sponsorship services and sponsored organizations.
  • Develop and enhance internal procedures and tools, including budgeting and forecasting tools, to improve service effectiveness.
  • Supervise and mentor Sr. Grants and Finance Managers, who each manage a team of Grants and Finance Associates and Managers.
  • Train and support Grants and Finance Managers to ensure that fiscal sponsorship services are high quality and meet the needs of FSOs.
  • Working with the FS Leadership team, ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws related to nonprofits and grants, and keep the team informed of regulatory changes.
  • Ensure funder report timeliness and provide effective communication with funders and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Manage department budget for Grants and Finance team.

FSO Relationship Management– 30%

  • Create and maintain strong relationships with Executive Directors, advisory boards, and major funders of fiscally sponsored organizations.
  • Ensure that FSOs remain in compliance with Fiscal Sponsorship Agreements.
  • Serve as main point of contact for escalated matters that arise in the course of business with FSOs.
  • Implement and manage processes and policies for developing and supporting advisory boards within fiscally sponsored organizations.
  • Create opportunities for the FSO community to provide input and feedback in the development of new initiatives and strategies.
  • Manage and coordinate in-person site visits or TSNE visits for fiscally sponsored organizations to foster engagement and support.
  • Maintain an open and effective communication strategy with leaders of fiscally-sponsored organizations and staff to ensure that timely information is shared.

  • Eight or more years of experience in a nonprofit leadership position.
  • Strong supervision and team/program experience required.
  • Prior experience leading a nonprofit preferred.
  • Prior experience working in grants and finance management.
  • Strong project management and strategic thinking skills.
  • Outstanding relationship management skills with significant experience.
  • Experience in designing and implementing a program or service line.
  • Experience building and maintaining a strong team culture within a highly diverse work environment.
  • Experience working on and/or with Boards of Directors.
  • Experience participating in or leading DEIB initiatives.
  • Some nonprofit organizational development experience.
  • Some experience with fundraising and development.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite.
  • Knowledge in Salesforce, Intacct, and/or Concur is a plus.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated skill in providing a high level of service to multiple clients, ideally in a nonprofit context.
  • Experience working as part of a team delivering coordinated services highly desirable.
  • Superior written, verbal and presentation communication skills, with demonstrated diplomacy and tact.
  • Good creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Commitment to provide leadership for the work of social and economic justice organizations.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

Location: Work will be performed between our office located at the NonProfit Center at 89 South Street, Suite 700, Boston, MA 02111 and your home office. This position is required to be on-site at least once per month and may require flexibility.

Schedule: This position is full-time at 37.5 hours per week and hours are flexible within reason.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation: The salary for this position is $182,400.00.
