GENERAL SUMMARY

This position implements the vision and directives of the Nisqually Parks Commission in developing and managing parks within the Nisqually homeland. This position is responsible for managing the Tribe's relationship with Washington State Parks for Nisqually State Park and for directing Nisqually Tribal programs and partnerships at Nisqually State Park and at other parks. This position requires excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills as well as outstanding organizational and project management skills. This position is expected to be self-directed as well as to work closely with the Nisqually Parks Commission, Tribal Council, Tribal Departments and programs, and public lands management agencies.

This position ensures the confidentiality, security, and accuracy of records, and promotes positive employee, customer, and community relations. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required and outstanding customer service to fellow employees, customers, vendors, etc. is expected. Regular attendance is required, and on occasion, later hours or weekend time may be required with project deadlines and a neat well-groomed professional appearance is essential at all times.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform. This list of responsibilities is intended to be representative of the duties performed within this classification.   • Lead staff coordinating Parks Commission directives for Nisqually State Park development. Facilitate all collaborative planning and operations meetings with Washington State Parks.
  • Facilitate development and implementation of intergovernmental agreements between the Tribe and public lands managers for resource protection, interpretation, and collaborative operational agreements on public lands in the Nisqually usual & accustomed area.
  • Develop and implement collaborative management projects and programs with Washington State Parks, other park management entities, and Nisqually Tribal programs.
  • Implement the Parks Commission directives for on- and near- reservation parks development, management, and operations.
  • Implement the Parks Commission directives for effective community engagement.
  • Lead staff coordinating Nisqually Tribe's public programs, activities and events at Nisqually State Park and other parks. Develop and implement regular and recurring events and programs featuring Nisqually culture keepers and staff. Coordinate closely with Nisqually State Park staff.
  • Work closely with Nisqually Tribal programs to develop regular events and programs for the public at Nisqually State Park. Support Tribal programs in identifying funding for these events.
  • Identify Nisqually Tribal and community members who are interested in and available to present classes, programs, and events celebrating Nisqually culture for the public at Nisqually State Park. Develop compensation schedule and identify funding sources. Coordinate individuals in producing events for the public.
  • Meets regularly with Washington State Parks staff to coordinate programming and events.
  • Produces events and programs at other public lands as funding, community interest, and capacity permits.
  • Secures resources to implement parks priorities through fundraising and participating in ongoing Nisqually Tribal budget processes.
  • Represents the Tribe in ongoing collaboration with public lands managers to design and develop programs that further the Tribe's goals of Telling the Nisqually story to the public.
  • Coordinate development of interpretive facilities, signs, exhibits, artwork, and programming for public lands as prioritized by Tribal leadership and Council.
  • Provide regular project updates to Nisqually Parks Commission and incorporate recommendations of Commissioners into program design and development.
  • Coordinates with Nisqually intergovernmental affairs and public relations staff to represent the Tribe appropriately to the public.
  • Coordinates legal consultation on matters requiring legal review and interpretation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 4 years' experience in government planning/administration.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license and maintain a driving record that meets the minimum requirements established by Nisqually Indian Tribes vehicle insurance provider.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of the Nisqually Indian Tribe's history, customs, traditions, and ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience working with Federally Recognized Tribes.
  • Successful experience managing projects in a non-profit or governmental setting.

SUPERVISION

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities. This position reports to the Planning Director.
