Under general supervision of the Project Director, develops, and instructs quarterly computer classes for veteran participants of the Veterans Upward Bound Program (the “Program”) based on the academic schedule below:

Fall 2024: October 14, 2024 to November 22, 2024

Winter 2025: January 27, 2025 to March 7, 2025

Spring 2025: April 21, 2025 to May 30, 2025

Summer 2025: July 21, 2025 to August 29, 2025

Schedule:

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday - In-person - 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Wednesday and Thursday - Online - 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Essential Job Duties

  • Develops, updates, revises and prepares class syllabus, lesson plans, presentations, handouts and other materials to effectively instruct participants. Subjects include basic/practical arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, and mathematics through pre-calculus
  • Provide intensive basic skill development in subjects required for GED completion and postsecondary enrollment
  • Assesses participants’ levels and recommends placement level for Program classes
  • Provides instruction for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels during scheduled time
  • Works with students individually if they need extra help and support in their math coursework
  • Tracks and manages participant attendance
  • Creates, revises and grades mid-terms and finals for every level
  • Documents participant progress and prepares a mid-term and final report on each participant’s progress and competency
  • Nominates a candidate for Scholar of the Quarter
  • Meets once a month with Program staff to go over participants’ academic progress
  • Reviews and updates curriculum with Project Director once a year

Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or related field, Master’s degree preferred
  • Must be able to teach classes in-person and online
  • Experience with Zoom strongly preferred
  • Two (2) – three (3) years of teaching experience in subject being taught
  • Specialized experience preferred in addressing the specific needs of veterans, including those who are disabled and/or homeless
  • Must show evidence of professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those facing Project Participants
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills and ability to work in cooperative management setting.
  • Must be experienced working with students individually, in groups and in a class setting.
  • Must have good organizational skills; effective verbal and written communication skills. Must display professional demeanor and positive attitude.
  • Preference for candidates with experience working with veterans, adult students or within a university/college Veteran Resource Centers, EOP, TRiO Program or other student support service programs.
  • Must demonstrate and understanding and sensitivity to the needs of first-generation and low‑income veterans; understanding of non-traditional students; and ability to establish rapport with target population

Computer & Software Skills

  • Must be proficient in the following computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Videoconferencing, the Internet
  • Experience with database management applications

Reasoning & Mental Abilities:

Uses critical thinking skills to interpret information furnished in written, oral or schedule form and to analyze more complex documents like agreements and contracts. Makes sound decisions and sets goals based on available information and evaluates situations and requirements to plan and adjust work accordingly.

Projects accurate future occurrences based on current or historic data. Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision; able to make decisions about the severity of variable situations and evaluate the most appropriate response; able to make appropriate decisions related to customer requests.

Work Environment & Exposures:

Position may require occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles, vibration and loud noise levels.

Will be exposed to varying weather conditions, soil, pollen, grass and plant materials and fertilizer while working; will be exposed to cleaning solutions of home strength; may be exposed to industrial strength solutions for pest control, paints or solvents.

HAZARDS: Occasionally exposed to biohazards such as bloodborne pathogens, sewage, building waste.

EQUIPMENT USE: Computer and copy machine.

COVID-19 Vaccination:

Must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated by the first day of work. A copy of the CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card must be submitted to Human Resources.
