Position Description (Full-Time)
Company Summary:
Phigenics provides independent expert guidance and advanced technologies to our clients to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and overall safety of water systems. Our clients include a diverse mix of industry leaders in healthcare, hospitality, government, higher education, retail, and manufacturing facilities. Phigenics does not sell water treatment chemicals and is not biased toward any treatment technology or supplier.
Position Summary:
As the Director of Research and Innovation, you will be responsible for driving the strategic direction and execution of our company's research and innovation initiatives. You will lead a team of talented scientists, engineers, and researchers to develop cutting-edge technologies and solutions to propel our company forward in the marketplace.
Key Duties:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive R&I strategy aligned with the company's overall goals and objectives. Identify emerging trends and opportunities in the industry and leverage them to drive innovation.
- Lead, mentor, and inspire a multidisciplinary team of researchers, technicians, and scientists. Foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, and excellence within the R&I department.
- Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of all R&D projects. Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Drive the development of new technologies, products, and solutions from concept to commercialization. Stay abreast of the latest advancements in technology and science and integrate them into our R&D efforts.
- Foster strategic partnerships and collaborations with external stakeholders, including academic institutions, research organizations, and industry partners. Leverage external expertise and resources to accelerate innovation and achieve R&D objectives.
- Manage the company's intellectual property portfolio, including patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. Identify opportunities for IP generation and protection to safeguard our competitive advantage.
- Develop and manage the R&D budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources to support key initiatives. Identify cost-saving opportunities and drive efficiency improvements within the R&D function.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, standards, and guidelines governing R&D activities. Work closely with regulatory affairs and legal teams to navigate regulatory requirements effectively.
- Develop work processes to ensure documentation for all research projects is organized and accessible using project management software systems (i.e. JIRA).
- Provide project management oversight for field testing activities strategic innovation projects, and/or new product launches.
- Compose reports for the Leadership Team and/or Board of Directors, provide updates for research studies and/or field testing, and present findings to sales and clients.
- Compile and report research and innovation metrics based on project milestones and Phigenics company scorecard inputs
- Lead the process for development and publication of peer-reviewed journal articles as well as content for external webinars or other marketing technical content
- Manage Stage and Gate documentation for initiatives and facilitate Stage and Gate meetings with marketing.
- Develop and implement work processes for ordering and maintaining supplies for phiRIT projects
- Work with sales, marketing, and PASL leadership to support expansion sales and problem-solving opportunities using Phigenics innovations.
- Collaborate with other Phigenics functional areas to update teams on key innovation projects and ensure collaboration across departments.
- Interface with Marketing, PASL, phiSAT, and Sales regularly to support new initiatives and applications that utilize Phigenics innovations.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a relevant field such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Microbiology.
- Water-related experience in engineering, construction, or related sciences (e.g., microbiology, chemistry)
- Proven track record of leadership and success in a research and development role, preferably within a related industry.
- Strong technical expertise and knowledge of scientific principles, methodologies, and tools relevant to R&D.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, project management, and team leadership.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a results-oriented mindset.
- Experience in intellectual property management and technology commercialization is desirable.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and quality management systems applicable to R&D activities.
- Understand potable and utility-building water systems and applications of water management beyond traditional waterborne pathogens of focus (e.g., Legionella)
Work Environment / Travel:
This is a full-time onsite laboratory position working with Biosafety Level 2 organisms. The position requires flexibility to hold remote meetings primarily via Teams and other video conferencing technologies for internal and external meetings. Dress for client-facing interactions is business professional or female equivalent, and dress for internal meetings is business casual.
