Position Function:

To provide safety, a supportive learning experience and empathic adult guidance to young adults in The LIFE Project. The LIFE Project Mentor works to build on clients’ strengths, assists them to create solutions and helps them discover hope for their futures. The position requires sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.


Requirements:

Education: High School diploma, Bachelor’s degree in a human service field from an accredited college or university preferred.


Experience: Effective listening skills, practice of Trauma-Informed Care approach, effective communication skills, understanding of the needs of young adults.


Functional: Ensure the safety of young adults by positive guidance, encouragement of young adults and ongoing observation of the physical environment of the facility. Responsible for completion of or supervising young adults in duties such as: general organization of supplies, kitchen, food storage, household cleanliness and assurance of health and safety standards.


Working Conditions:

Exposure to clients with behavior problems, including possible physical aggression; exposure to illness and blood.


Exposure to Confidential Information:

Maintain confidentiality and follow policies related to personnel records and client records.


Key Expectations/Responsibilities:

Operations:

  • Ensure safety and guidance of young adults.
  • Ensure program compliance with SIL contract.
  • Responsible for maintaining the schedule of activities for the young adults.
  • Life skills group
  • House meetings
  • Relaxation time
  • Safety, confidentiality and protection of young adults by vigilant phone screening, visitor screening and off-campus approval process. Documentation of phone calls, visitors, off-campus trips and volunteers must be completed.
  • Assign chores to clients to ensure cleanliness of the living space.
  • Complete facilities requests as needed.

Programming:

  • Assist with house meetings.
  • Provide guidance to young adults about how they will get themselves to appointments.
  • Utilize a Trauma-Informed Care model in the SIL setting.
  • Process experiences and team with other staff to address behavior intervention solutions.
  • Have a conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change.
  • Have the ability to establish a respectful relationship with persons served to help them gain skills and confidence.
  • Have the ability to work collaboratively with other personnel and/or service providers or professionals.
  • Have the capacity to maintain a helping role and to intervene appropriately to meet service goals.
  • Have the ability to set appropriate limits and maintain high ethical standards.

Documentation:

  • Document behavior interventions and communicate to other staff for successful follow-up and consistency.
  • Complete all documentation required by the program in a timely manner.
  • Other forms as indicated by the case or dictated by the program.
