The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) was founded in 1935 in Ashland, OR, and has grown from a three-day festival of two plays to a nationally renowned theatre arts organization that presents a rotating repertory season of up to 10 plays and musicals, including illuminating interpretations of Shakespeare, other enduring classics, and new works. OSF productions have been presented on Broadway, internationally, and at regional, community, and high school theatres across the country. Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluate health and safety risks to OSF on an ongoing basis and advise OSF management as to best practices and risks regarding safety on the stages, backstage, the shops, public areas, and offices. Ensure that, at a minimum, the legally required safety standards are met, and practices are implemented.
- Administer OSF’s workplace safety and accident prevention programs, ensuring compliance with federal and state OSHA requirements. Follow through on issues revealed and ensures appropriate actions are taken in a timely manner.
- Models and supports the mission and values of OSF by:
- Demonstrating inclusive behavior and creating an environment of belonging.
- Maintaining a safe and anti-racist working environment
- Recognizing micro-aggressions and interrupting othering behaviors.
- Building a team atmosphere and structure to encourage behaviors among staff members that exemplify respect and inclusion.
- Operationalizing IDEA concepts into organizational practices including systems, processes, problem solving approach, personnel hiring and management practices.
- Manage COVID Safety Programs including infectious and emerging disease protocols.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state environmental compliance laws.
- Ensure administration of safety data sheet (SDS) systems and chemical inventory.
- Manage legally mandated safety, health, environmental, and accident reports to local, state, and federal authorities.
- Assist with emergency preparedness programs, including: wildfire smoke protocols, power failures, fire, flood, and active shooter awareness and prevention.
- Manage company-wide emergency communication system.
- Manage or supervise management of wellness and fitness programs, facilities, and equipment.
- Acquire and maintain certification as a CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogen trainer to facilitate training of other OSF staff.
- Ensure first aid kits are maintained.
- Coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of the organization’s Health & Safety Programs and direct efforts to improve the safety of volunteers, visitors, and employees.
- Work with People & Culture to set up and maintain complete and up to date Employee Health Records for all staff and maintain and submit OSHA 300 records.
- Maintain regular, direct contact with employees, State and County Public Health professionals, Local Emer-gency and Safety Personnel, risk managers, safety professionals and experts, consultants, trainers and OSHA officials.
- Oversee and ensure effective functioning of the Safety Committee in accordance with Oregon and Federal OSHA regulations.
- Lead the Health, Wellness and Safety Committee(s) and provide guidance to Safety Coordinator.
- Collaborate with any hired contractors including and not limited to OSF’s on-site security on safety protocols in accordance with OSF’s programs.
- Manage communications with SAIF and work with People & Culture department on all operations around Workers’ Compensation.
- Assist employees with programs such as ergonomic work evaluations to reduce occupation-related injuries and assist company members with accessibility issues under ADA by providing tools and modifications. Manage return-to-work process with employees, managers and People & Culture, including ergonomics, training in ergenomic practices, and or other assessment of work environment. Assist with the management of explosives for the use of pyrotechnic materials in shows.
- Liaison with local fire authorities regarding the use of open flame and pyrotechnics on stage.
- Liaison with local police regarding use of firearms on stage.
- Perform initial OSHA training of new staff at employee orientation and provide regular updates to all employees.
- Lead accident/incident investigation.
- Oversee Quarterly Workplace Hazard Inspection.
- Provide guidance related to safety concerns from individuals across all workspaces including post-incident support and recovery.
- Maintain Emergency Preparedness Plan, updating it as needed and training staff in its contents.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received: Associate Director of General & Company Management
Supervision Exercised: Safety Coordinator(s); Associate Safety Coordinator(s), Wellness/Fitness providers and/or staff.
Liaisons With: General & Company Management, People & Culture, Producers, Stage Managers, Production Managers, Facilities, Security, and all department heads on ongoing safety issues.
Schedule: Irregular work schedule including evenings and weekends, generally a 5–6-day week. The work schedule changes frequently with little notice.
Required: OSHA 30 certification
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Work Experience: Five years of experience in theatrical management roles with safety responsibilities. A Master's degree in theater may be considered in lieu of three years of professional experience.
Skills, Abilities, and/or Knowledge: · Intermediate to expert skill level with Microsoft Office Suite programs, particularly Outlook, Excel and SharePoint. · General understanding of current health and safety guidelines, regulations, programs, and laws. · Knowledge of the administration of SDS systems and how to interpret SDSs. · Knowledge of safety practices and industrial hygiene in production shops. · Superior written and verbal communication skills (English primarily). Strong math skills. · Ability to manage employee relations with a wide variety of staff with diverse backgrounds. · Highly developed organizational skills and the ability to keep multiple projects moving forward simultaneously. · Ability to maintain highest degree of confidentiality. · Willingness and ability to acquire necessary qualification(s) through on-the-job training and education and certification opportunities. Physical Abilities: · Frequently walking, climb stairs, travel around campus on inspections. · Occasionally climb straight ladders and kneel, crouch, stoop, and crawl. · Regularly sit at a workstation for hours at a time. · Occasionally lift 20 lbs. Preferred Qualifications & Skills: Experience working with theatrical unions (AEA, IATSE, SDC). EDI or anti-racist trainings. COVID-19 Compliance Certifications. Environmental, Health and Safety experience. OSHA Certifications. CPR, AED, First Aid training. Knowledge of OSHA, HIPAA, OHA, CDC guidelines.
