Position: Senior Automation / Welding Engineer

Reports To: Director of Program Management, Quality & Continuous Improvement

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

The Senior Automation / Welding Engineer is a specialized position focusing on automation and weld applications both current jobs and new part applications for both: current part and new part launches. Therefore, this requires the ability to plan new applications including process setup, equipment specification and acquisition and process development.

Skills in troubleshooting, problem solving, corrective and preventive action planning and implementation are required. Design skills are highly desirable.

Provide technical / engineering support and expertise necessary to ensure continued success of the manufacturing departments as well as process optimization. Plans, designs, and optimizes various welding and assembly processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s Degree in welding engineering or related field

· 15 years’ experience in the design and manufacturing of welding and assembly cells, preferably for the automotive industry

· Welding, Welding Inspector and/or Welding Engineer certification

· Strong understanding of welding, assembly, electrical, pneumatics, hydraulics, and PLC programming

· Strong understanding of Quality Assurance (Control Plans, PFMEAs, Flow Diagrams, GD&T / Print Reading, SPC, APQP, etc.) including machine FMEA’s

· Individual must have excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to interface with the customers and suppliers of equipment

Responsibilities:

· Follow all the Anchor Principles and Guidelines, as well as Anchor policies and procedures

· Direct the design process, installation and complete tryout and startup of the automation/welding/assembly equipment

· Define new welding and automation processes as needed, develop automation concepts, develop fixture designs, prepare specification for required equipment, obtain competitive price quotations, prepare purchase justification, purchase equipment, complete work cell layouts, and install and debug process

· Work with Project Engineers and program managers on all new projects that require automation equipment

· Maintain and keep current the machine building standards for the company

· Develop automation concepts, fixturing, and equipment specifications

· Aid in the development of project budgets. Obtain competitive price quotations, prepare purchase justification, and buy equipment as needed.

· Be responsible for complete documentation of all equipment and fixtures processes including PM procedures. Train personnel in proper cell operation and maintenance. Lead the establishment of PM programs and training personnel in the execution of PM requirements in designated area.

· Perform continuous improvement projects on the shop floor to achieve desired results, including cost improvements

· Perform effectively on APQP Teams and Continuous Improvement Teams to complete Team assignments and achieve expected results. Verify all APQP, PPAP & Quality Standards are adjusted and approved as needed

· Lead installation of any new equipment, the programming and troubleshooting of operator HMI’s, robotics, and weld equipment

· Provide verification data necessary to demonstrate the success of each project against criteria specified in the cost justification

· Develop and maintain a critical parts list for the area for all fixtures and weld equipment

· Train and develop Weld Technicians for all areas

· Special projects and duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities:

· Knowledge and experience with Steel and Aluminum fabrication, welding, grinding, and assembly operations are essential

· Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, ASME or ISO implementation and auditing are also a plus

· Analytical and decision-making skills to perform the overall function of the position

· Experience in FMEA, APQP, PPAP and SPC are a strong plus

· Ability to take action within scope of authority without requiring specific direction from manager

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This person is not responsible for supervising and managing others

Work Environment:

· The employee shall adhere to the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines as outlined in the Employee Handbook as well as other safety policies and procedures

· While performing the duties, the incumbent is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

· Time split between manufacturing plan and office environment

· Off-Shift and ‘on-call' work may be periodically needed, particularly where manufacturing equipment is in continual 24-hour operation and to ensure target completion of project work

Requirements:
