The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 111 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHMLA at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall—is looking forward to new building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach, and innovative audience engagement.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Coordinator, Volunteer Programs for our Education, Programs, and Community Engagement department. The Coordinator, Volunteer Programs reports to the Manager, Volunteer Programs supporting a dynamic, diverse Volunteer Program that engages the greater Los Angeles Community in authentic museum projects at the Natural History Museum. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversees volunteer communications, scheduling, and application/paperwork flow.

  • Responsible for maintenance of online databases, including Volgistics and various spreadsheet systems, as well as volunteer paperwork, including filing.

  • Facilitates volunteer Orientation Sessions and volunteer and docent enrichment events (both virtual and in-person).

  • Coordinates and runs Volunteer Service Days.

  • Implements volunteer teams during public programs and special events.

  • Collaborates with Volunteer Programs team, museum staff, and program partners to create new volunteer program enrichment opportunities.

  • Produces volunteer service reports for internal and external use.

  • Supports and participates in content creation and materials development.

  • Embody, to volunteers and external partners, the philosophy and goals of the volunteer experience as an informal education museum program

This position has the following requirements:

  • The schedule for this position is Tuesday - Saturday, prioritizing onsite workdays with only occasional remote options.

  • Experience working collaboratively with diverse teams. Experience working with or coordinating volunteers preferred.

  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication.

  • Comfort with a computer-heavy workload and with a shared office space. Experience with data entry and spreadsheet management.

  • Excellent follow through and attention to detail. Must be extremely organized and able to work under pressure and meet concurrent, tight deadlines.

  • Experience with and openness to working with a wide variety of people.

  • A valid California Driver License and a Personal Automobile Liability Insurance or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation needed to carry out job ­related essential functions.

  • 2 years of prior experience in project coordination and program development.

  • Excellent customer service skills

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community. Hourly range for this position is $22.81 - $24.53 based on experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full time-regular, non- exempt position. NHMLAC, in good faith, believes that this posted rate of compensation is the accurate range for this role at this location at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future. Actual compensation within that range will be dependent upon the individual’s relevant skills, experience, qualifications, and applicable laws.
