Job DescriptionJob DescriptionThe Center for Teaching and Learning at Harris-Stowe State University will provide high-level support by promoting inclusive and innovative teaching, fostering student learning, and building a thriving teaching and learning community at HSSU. The center will be a hub for pedagogical guidance and support for curriculum and course transformations, including using technology to increase student engagement, support students with different learning styles, integrate learning inside and outside the classroom, and advance student learning.

Job Summary

The Center for Teaching and Learning Director is responsible for providing vision and leadership for the Center for Teaching and Learning. The Director will support excellence in teaching, learning, and student engagement at Harris-Stowe State University. The Director interacts directly with faculty and staff to coordinate and carry out its initiatives.

Essential Job Duties

  • Plans and executes campus programming that promotes excellence in on-ground, hybrid, and distance teaching and learning; conducts workshops and consultations to enhance teaching effectiveness for faculty; creates forums and division-level discussions on curriculum development, mentoring, and student learning.
  • Develops campus partnerships with departments with goals aligned with CTL activities and initiatives. Partnership examples include collaborating with the Writing Center, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee to enhance equity-oriented teaching, the Deans, the Registrar's Office, and others in Student Affairs to pursue shared goals and initiatives.
  • Serves on institutional committees and participates in regional and national initiatives related to areas of responsibility.
  • Participates in campus working groups that develop and implement tools and methodologies for educational assessment.
  • Facilitates and promotes classroom and laboratory educational innovation.
  • Leads the implementation and evaluation of educational technologies and online media that enhance student engagement and learning, including the learning management system and related tools, overseeing and guiding future staff in the CTL.
  • The Director collaborates with offices involved in online learning support, such as Information Technology (IT), providing input on strategic communications related to education and online learning. The Director also plays a role in determining offerings on open online educational platforms while leveraging these platforms to advance the institution's educational goals and priorities.
  • CTL outreach efforts include supporting faculty, creating and encouraging outreach efforts that broaden STEM participation, staying abreast of educational standards in K-12 education, building relationships with schools and community organizations, and tracking and evaluating outreach activities across campus.
  • Oversees the staff, budgets, and operations of the CTL, leading and guiding future CTL staff.
  • Supports the creation and enhancement of instructor training and resources focused on creatively using technology in teaching and learning.
  • Organizes and leads faculty learning communities focused on various aspects of course transformation and teaching with technology.
  • Offers individual and group consultations to faculty on innovative uses of technology in teaching.
  • Other duties, as required.

Required Skills

Applications from candidates who have experience in faculty development in the educational technologies field, as well as teaching experience in higher education, are invited.

This position requires a master's degree from an accredited university and 3-5 years of experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a doctoral degree. All candidates must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire.

In addition, the CTL seeks a person with the following knowledge and experience:

  • Knowledge of trends in higher education, the educational technology field, and faculty development
  • Knowledge of digital educational technologies that support effective and inclusive teaching and the ability to communicate effectively about these tools
  • Strong and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Experience in faculty development that may include the development and fostering of learning communities, the development and successful implementation of training opportunities for faculty, the production of appropriate teaching and learning resources in a variety of modalities, the development, and assessment of pilot projects with educational technologies, and consultations with faculty
  • Experience in teaching and supporting faculty in one or more of the following areas: STEM classes; high enrollment classes; hybrid or remote; experiential or project-based learning
  • Demonstrated success in leading university-level instruction
  • Demonstrated communication skills both orally and in writing, making clear and relevant presentations to various audiences, and leading training and developmental programs
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in supervising and mentoring staff.
  • Self-motivated and demonstrated record of taking initiative and working independently
  • Ability to organize and prioritize projects
  • Adept at troubleshooting and problem-solving with the ability to assess a situation, identify issues and practical solutions, and determine the best course of action

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership positions in teaching and learning experience in university education
  • Experience with K-12 educational outreach
  • Ph.D. in Educational Technology, Curriculum Instruction, or a related field
