PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

A Peer Support Specialist provides support and guidance to individuals who are undergoing certain challenges or transitions. They help individuals develop their skills and confidence and assist them in making a successful transition from incarceration to community living.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide 1:1 mentoring to people in a community correction setting.
  • Assist clients in obtaining services to help them make a successful transition from incarceration to community living.
  • Promote recovery, wellness, and healthy lifestyle behaviors.
  • Provide program orientation for all new clients.
  • Arrange and supervise appropriate leisure activities for clients.
  • Develop and facilitate skills-based peer support groups.
  • Assist with crisis intervention.
  • Ability to provide mentoring, crisis management and addiction recovery support.
  • Serve as an advocate for clients experiencing programmatic or behavioral struggles.
  • Help clients work through social or emotional barriers to stay motivated to reach their goals.
  • Accompany clients to court, other appointments for support and advocacy as well as sober support groups.
  • Help clients with self-determined goal setting.
  • Maintain appropriate and professional boundaries with clients.
  • Accurately document all activities in an electronic health record.
  • Develop and maintain a resource directory for use by clients.
  • Assist in arranging and providing transportation for community appointments and services.
  • Must maintain and obtain ongoing credentials for the position, including but not limited to obtaining State of Colorado Certifications, Colorado Peer and Family Specialist CPFS) and National Certification with NAADAC through the National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS).
  • Applicants must have a documented history of involvement in the criminal justice system.
  • Report safety concerns to the appropriate staff.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Frequently travel within El Paso County and Colorado State as needed to meet with Clients and provide Client opportunities.
