Hours: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Summary of Position:

The Lower School at Milton Academy seeks a full-time staff member for K-5 Teacher Support and After School Program (ASP) staffing. The candidate will be responsible for providing daily instructional support in K-5 classrooms care and supervision for students who attend the ASP program.

The successful candidate should have experience in schools or childcare, excellent interpersonal skills, and the willingness to work and collaborate with the lead homeroom teachers, special area teachers, members of the K-5 learning support team, and the ASP team.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Curriculum

  • Carry out instructional plans for students in both whole group and small group settings
  • Support lead homeroom teachers during classroom instruction
  • Collaborate and plan with lead homeroom teachers as needed
  • Participate in regular lunch and recess duty as scheduled
  • Provide classroom coverage for K-5 teachers as needed
  • Support students with homework after school
  • Facilitate games and activities, particularly as part of ASP
  • Encourage freedom of choice and play, particularly as part of ASP
  • Escort children to and from various activity locations within the program and around campus
  • Maintain daily attendance in ASP
  • Monitor students to ensure their safety and well-being
  • Participate in the life of the school outside the classroom, faculty meetings, lunch and recess duties, and advising student activities.
  • Create a student-centered learning atmosphere that fosters a positive classroom environment which encourages student participation and discussion.
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Stay informed about the latest developments in elementary education and auxiliary programming trends.
  • Learn about diversity, equity, and inclusion in education; incorporate related principles when designing curriculum, teaching, and engaging with students.
  • Collaborate with K-5 colleagues to develop inter-departmental and cross-disciplinary projects and initiatives
  • Actively support students, providing mentorship and academic guidance.
  • Assess and evaluate student performance through assignments, projects, and observations.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues regarding academic progress.

Community

  • Be a visible, accessible presence around campus.
  • Contribute to creating a positive community culture that ensures students are heard, seen, valued, and cared for.
  • Share in the enforcement of our expectations for students.
  • Actively participate in greater community enrichment activities, such as advising a student activity, acting as a faculty sponsor to a student club, coaching an athletic team, or acting as an affinity group facilitator.

  • Communicate with the appropriate supervisor when unable to meet any professional obligation.

Supervision to be received: Supervised by the Lower School Principal and the Director of Auxiliary Programs.

Supervision to be exercised: None.

Education/Certification/Licensure

Required: An associate’s degree in education or a related field

Preferred: A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field

Experience

Required: Experience in an after school program, summer camp, or equivalent environment with children

Preferred: Experience working in a school setting

Competencies

Required:

  • Proficiency supporting K-5 instruction and leading after school activities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated computer expertise including GoogleSuite.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and related issues.
  • Receptive to supervision and professional development.
  • Desire to be a part of a dynamic educational community.

Physical Abilities

Required:

  • Must be able to work at a computer for up to 8 hours each day in conjunction with OSHA requirements.
  • Must be able to teach/support in a classroom setting and use relevant instructional technology.
  • Must be able to move around the Milton Academy campus without restriction.
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds.
