POSITION SUMMARY

The Social Media Specialist plays a crucial role in maximizing the impact of the Society’s voice and brand through social media channels. They also support tasks related to the Society’s marketing and public relations communications initiatives as needed. They execute and manage the Society’s organic and paid social media campaigns, write and edit marketing-related digital content, and take ownership of projects, demonstrating a deep understanding of social media and its integration with the overall marketing goals for the Society.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Execute and implement the organic and paid social media strategy for ASH and the ASH Research Collaborative (ASH RC), ensuring accurate, timely, and cohesive dissemination of key messages and brand standards across all channels.
  • Manage content calendars, create compelling copy and multimedia elements to engage the audience effectively.
  • Independently plan, execute, and optimize paid social campaigns, leveraging insights from social media analytics.
  • Monitor social media feeds, engage with users, and actively participate in social listening to gain insights into audience preferences, sentiments, and trends. Prepare comprehensive reports on social media performance, providing data-driven insights and analysis to measure the effectiveness of campaigns and inform future strategy.
  • Cultivate relationships with existing audiences by responding to inquiries, comments, and messages promptly, maintaining a positive and engaging online presence. Strategically nurture and grow new audiences through targeted outreach, collaborations, and community-building initiatives for ASH.
  • Manage the social media strategy and content creation for the ASH RC, overseeing seamless implementation to ensure consistent messaging and brand identity across platforms and report generation. Analyze reports to optimize content and drive audience engagement and growth.
  • Work closely with the Public Relations team to amplify ASH newsworthy content.
  • Establish social media performance metrics, analyze results against goals and benchmarks, and provide valuable recommendations for improvement.
  • Advise and serve as a resource to staff who manage other ASH owned social media channels; share proven best practices and provide recommendations.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, Public Relations, Marketing, English, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience or comparable undergraduate internship experience.
  • Experience managing social media content for an organization or brand, particularly related to health and science-related communications initiatives, strongly preferred.
  • Experience with paid social media and social media analytics preferred.
  • Proficiency with Word and Microsoft Office required.
  • Excellent writing skills with familiarity in Associated Press style a plus.
  • Strong proficiency in design tools and ability to create visually appealing social media content.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and organizational ability.
  • Strong oral communication skills.
  • Ability to efficiently manage time, meet schedules/deadlines and handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including professionalism and ability to work well with ASH leadership.

PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to use computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
  • May require some out-of-town work travel.

ASH has a hybrid work environment, with core in-office days for all ASH staff on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and telework on Mondays and Fridays for eligible positions. The Society’s headquarters is in Washington, DC, and is within walking distance of several Metro stations on the Blue/Orange/Silver and Red lines.
