Position Information
St. Augustine Preparatory Academy is seeking to hire a College & Career Advisor (K4-8th), an enthusiastic and highly collaborative counselor to connect elementary and middle school students with community organizations and pre college programs that ultimately inspire a vision for their future. This person will work directly with students, teachers, parents, and partners in a variety of settings to help our littlest Lions see what's possible. Experience serving urban youth and/or families, a strong ability to integrate technology, network with college and community entities, and identify resources to increase students’ opportunities for postsecondary scholarship, matriculation, and graduation preferred. Previous advising experience not required. Coaching and other co-curricular opportunities are available.
The ideal candidate will be a masterful connector and collaborator, leveraging his/her interpersonal skills and knowledge of college and community entities and opportunities to maximize students’ information base and college/career-readiness experiences.
The development of college and career readiness at St. Augustine Preparatory Academy combines research-based best instructional and advising practices, acknowledging the social, emotional, and developmental needs of every student. Students learn best when they are engaged in genuine and authentic learning experiences that align with their evolving interests, inspiring their natural curiosities and empowering them for future success.
Reporting structures: The College and Career Advisor will report to the Assistant Director of College & Career.
A St. Augustine Preparatory Academy College and Career Advisor will:
Program Development
- Identify and steward resources and partnerships for college going experiences (summer programs, field trips, guest speakers, mentorships, and participation in other programs like METS).
- Build a network of college and community organizations that know our students’ abilities and value.
- Work in tandem with faculty and administration to ensure that the college and career program is aligned to the school’s larger strategic/school plan.
Advising
- Support and advise students in college and career exploration, academic progress, and life skills development - emphasis on 1:1 advising in Middle School.
- Create and carry out an annual college & career family engagement plan related to key initiatives and deliverables.
- Ensure timely student submission of all program application materials to the appropriate entity.
Coordinating and Communicating
- Coordinate all efforts with faculty and administration.
- Create and facilitate parent and student college knowledge group sessions, workshops, and college visits.
- Plan, organize and facilitate college fairs, tours and summer ‘college going’ activities as well as organize and lead visits from postsecondary education entities on campus.
- Maintain an accurate record of college and career exploration trends, program participation, activities, deliverables, events and expectations for faculty, administration, and parents.
- Maintain positive and productive relationships, focused on collective problem-solving processes, in order to create, support, and sustain an environment conducive to optimal learning.
Data Management
- Leverage data systems like SchooLinks© to track and maintain records on individual students including 1:1 meeting notes, event attendance, student career goals, etc.
- Analyze each student's graduating class and entire school transcript data to provide information on general trends, areas of focus, and school wide ‘wins’ to best advise students, teachers, and school leaders.
- A belief in the ability of every child and a commitment to ensure excellence for each student
- Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s degree in Career/College Counseling or Education a plus)
- Wisconsin Certification PI 34 is desirable, but not required
- Effective oral and written communication skills - bilingual in Spanish preferred
- Experience advising high-need high school-age students and their families preferred
- Team player committed to the St. Augustine Preparatory mission and model
- Participating member in a local Church
- Lastly and most important, the candidate must demonstrate and possess the highest integrity and be able to live the values, beliefs, and culture of St. Augustine Prep
