EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR


An exceptional Executive Director is sought to provide strategic leadership and vision for amplifying the collective voice of Hartford's diverse neighborhoods. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have full oversight of the organization's mission, operations, programming, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement activities.


This unique opportunity involves building upon a legacy as the preeminent coalition representing Hartford's 13 Neighborhood Revitalization Zones (NRZs). The Executive Director will inspire collaboration among residents, businesses, nonprofits, and city/state government to drive positive change across the community, representing all of Hartfords neighborhoods.


The ideal candidate has a deep passion for community empowerment, community economic development, civic engagement, equitable revitalization, and advocating for underserved populations. You are a consummate relationship-builder with the credibility to unify diverse stakeholders around a shared vision for Hartford's future. Additionally, the ideal candidate for this role is a proactive and hands-on leader who is prepared to take on responsibilities independently at the outset. As funding becomes available, you will have the opportunity to build and lead a small, dedicated team over time.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Leadership
  • In conjunction with the Board of Directors, developing and implementing a multi-year strategic vision and plan to maximize the impact as the unified voice for Hartford's diverse neighborhoods and residents.
  • Designing and executing an organizational strategy centered on community empowerment, equitable revitalization, and improving quality of life.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Building collaborative partnerships and coalitions across neighborhood groups, nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Serving as the principal spokesperson and community ambassador, advocating persuasively for neighborhood interests.
  • Promoting civic engagement and facilitating open dialogue between community members and local government/elected officials.
  • Program Development
  • Designing and leading high-impact civic engagement programs, advocacy initiatives, and forums for interaction with local leaders and policymakers.
  • Identifying opportunities to launch new programs and initiatives aligned with neighborhood needs and strategic priorities.
  • Operations Management
  • Overseeing all internal operations including budgeting, financial management, compliance, staffing, governance, and Board relations.
  • Providing inspirational leadership to staff and volunteers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Fundraising
  • Spearheading comprehensive fundraising efforts to secure sustainable revenue from public, private, corporate, and philanthropic sources.
  • Advocacy and Positioning
  • Elevating brand positioning as the preeminent authority and go-to resource on Hartford's community development priorities.
  • Analyzing urban trends and emerging issues impacting Hartford's neighborhoods to inform programs and advocacy efforts



EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS


Experience

  • 5 years of nonprofit leadership experience, preferably in community development, equitable revitalization, or urban advocacy roles
  • Proven track record of building strategic partnershipsand collaborative initiatives
  • Success leading community development, advocacy, civic engagement, or urban revitalization programs
  • Experienced public speakerand community advocate on neighborhood/resident issues
  • Fundraising experiencesecuring grants, major gifts, corporate/government funding
  • Experience working directly with underserved urban populations


Knowledge and Skills

  • Deep understanding of the principles of community development, equitable revitalization, and urban planning
  • Knowledge of civic processes, municipal governance, zoning/land use, etc.
  • Expertise in nonprofit management- operations, finance, programming, governance
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and coalition-building capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
  • Grant writing, donor cultivation, and fundraising competencies
  • Proficiency with fundraising CRM, budgeting/accounting software
